The celebrity governor known for his love of premium cigars was headed to the Ottawa airport Wednesday when his motorcade made a detour to a hotel. There, Schwarzenegger picked up a Cuban Partagas cigar in a shop, with the $14.83 bill paid by an aide traveling with him, the Ottawa Citizen newspaper reported.

enye.pngSpanish speakers have gotten used to seeing their language take a beating when it comes to URLs, since such common accents and even an entire letter — the beloved Ñ – have previously been unavailable for use in our browser address bar. Given the constraint, concessions have been made over the years, or people have simply had to call their website something else so as not to risk embarassment in the form of words like year becoming anus. But that’s all going to change now, as the Spanish government has labored to get the standards changed to accommodate the proper use of the language on URLs, as well as the characters associated with the other languages of Spain (Catalan, Valencian, Euskera and Galician):

Red.es, the industry in charge of domain registry in Spain, has informed the 62 accredited registry agents to allow names with the the characters ‘á’, ‘à’, ‘é’, ‘è’, ‘í’, ‘ï’ ‘ó’, ‘ò’, ‘ú’, ‘ü’, ‘ñ’, ‘ç’ y ‘l.l’.

Immigration Reform Not Looking Likely

immigration.jpgIf a test vote taken today in the US Senate is any indication, the country is a long way from comprehensive immigration reform. The current bipartisan compromise failed a test vote today. By a vote of 33-63, the Senate fell far short of the 60 votes that would have been needed to limit debate on the immigration measure and put it on a path to passage. The 49-48 vote just after midnight on making the temporary worker program itself temporary came two weeks after the Senate rejected an earlier attempt to end the program after five years.

papalula.jpgDespite Pope Benedict telling Brazilians not to use birth control or else face the fires of hell, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has introduced a $51m plan to subsidize birth control pills. Birth control pills have already been available for free at government-run clinics and the country already hands out free condoms, the pills will be made available at more than 3,500 private drug stores at significantly reduced prices, as low as around 20 US cents . For men who want to be involved in birth control, the government is also planning to increase the number of free vasectomies performed at state hospitals.
