Shakira on the big screen?

epa_shakira_196351m.jpgCan’t get enough of Shakira’s shaking hips on videos? You might be getting a chance to the Colombian superstar for a lot longer than the standard three minutes. It seems that Shakira has decided to embark on a new endeavor completely outside of music, in a new movie by famed director Mike Nichols:

That’s according to press in Los Angeles, where the Daily News reports on Shakira’s desire to work with Mike Nichols in [the movie]“Hips Don’t Lie”.

In the same report, Shakira debunks rumors that her first experience in front of the camera will be under the orders of Meixcan director Alfonso Arau in his upcoming bio-pic of legendary Carlos Gardel “El día que me quieras” (”Dare to Love Me”), as had been announced previously.

According to Spain’s 20 Minutos, Shakira is in talks with Nichols now, and had planned to start working with him earlier but couldn’t, due to her heavy (120 concert) tour schedule.

Shaki previously said that she wouldn’t be doing any acting, and that she would be taking a sabbatical. What happened to that?

Mexico City makes commuters read

a05n1cul-4_mini.jpgThere’s nothing like the Mexico City metro: hundreds of miles of sweaty commute, neon green seats and beggars and entertainers of all sorts. Idle time is often spent fending off gropers and the occasional organ grinder, but Mexico City’s local government is giving riders another way to while away the hours: reading.

250,000 editions of an anthology featuring Mexican writers such as Elena Poniatowska and Juan Villoro will be distributed throughout the city’s green line, the longest trajectory running from the north to the south of the huge metropolis. Metro users can pick up a book when they get on, read it during their trip, then return it before hopping off at their destination.

The program, called “Para leer de boleto” looks to make non-readers into readers,”encourage reading among those who occasionally read, and provide reading material to those who cannot afford books.” I wonder if train riders are really going to choose a literature anthology over sexy comic books or revista Alarma.

alma.jpgTonight, desperate housewife and Tony Parker’s wifey to be, Eva Longoia, can be seen hosting the National Council of La Raza’s 2007 ALMA Awards. The awards actually took place on June 1st but tonight they air on ABC at 9 am Eastern time. The show will open with Ms. Longoria and amigo Mario Lopez doing a salsa number. The awards highlight Latino entertainment and entertainers. Slated to perform are Beyonce (singing in Spanish?) and my fave, Calle 13.
