RCTV bites back and broadcasts on YouTube

We’ve been telling you about the controversial closing of Venezuela’s RCTV for a few days, talking about the public’s reaction, the protests and president Hugo Chavez’s threats to other media that their fate could be the same. But what’s become of RCTV in the past few days? They’re not just sitting around lamenting the passing of their network. They’ve found a way to work around Chavez’s broadcasting restriction by broadcasting somewhere where (at least for now) free speech reigns: the internet.

Using YouTube, it’s almost business as usual for the forbidden network, which filed this report from the RCTV protests which continue to rage on:

According to Spain’s 20 Minutos, RCTV is also being helped along by Colombia’s Caracol network, which is allowing them to broadcast via an international signal.

Yet another example of how the internet is empowering people to find alternate ways to express themselves. I wonder if Chavez will block YouTube in Venezuela now.

Condi Wags Finger at Spain

condoleezza_rice.jpgSecretary of State Condoleezza Rice arrived in Spain today to make nice with the Iberian nation but the first public words out of her mouth were of reproach. Condi criticized the Spanish government for its relationship with Cuba and said that Spain wasn’t pulling its weight in Afghanistan. She said:

Democratic states have an obligation to act democratically, meaning to support opposition in Cuba, not to give the regime the idea that they can transition from one dictatorship to another…I would like to see all of the allies do more, and Spain is included in that list.

Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Zapatero said he wasn’t surprised by the differences. The U.S. government and Spain have also been at odds over Spain’s relationship with Venezuela and its President Hugo Chavez.

If Condi is so concerned about how good relations between Cuba and Spain are maybe someone needs to show her the Iberia commercial.

abc_gma_spelling_070531_mn.jpgThe national buzz (excuse the pun) may be about the 80th Annual Scripps National Spelling Bee and its 13 year old champion Evan O‘Dorney but as I write this, words like j-u-a-n-e-t-e are making champions out of school children. That’s because Scholastic Inc. is holding the 2007 NYC Spanish Spelling Bee (El Certamen de
Deletreo en Español de la Ciudad de Nueva York) in its auditorium and NY1 Noticias is airing the competition live. Regional champs in grades 4, 5 and 6 compete within their own grade. So far the winners have been fourth grader Richard Torrenegra with “juanete” and fifth grader Jhonny Herredia Marmol with “autobús”.
