A Little NYC in DR

12:05 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Dominican Republic · Comments Off

29 May 2007

santodomingosubway.jpgThere are about 600,000 Dominicans living in NYC and Dominican President Leonel Fernandez used to be one of them. Perhaps its nostalgia for times past that have led Fernandez to build a NYC style subway system in Santo Domingo. But not everyone is as excited about this mass transit option especially when they look at the bill. Originally the train was set to cost $464 million. That figure is up to 710 million, more than 2 percent of the Dominican Republic’s gross domestic product and expected to rise. So do Dominicans need a subway or would that money be better spent say on infrastructure or poverty?
Only time will tell.

Miss Universe : Miss USA Falls Down and Gets Booed

10:36 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Events| TV| Women| mexico · Comments Off

29 May 2007

I tend to side with Miss Sweden who didn’t attend last night’s Miss Universe competition because it doesn’t represent the modern woman. But who hasn’t seen the replay over and over of poor Miss USA, who not only got booed by the live Mexican audience (maybe she should of worn a banner that says amnesty for all immigrants), but she also busted her ass, proving that it ain’t easy being pretty. And in case you haven’t seen Miss USA taking a fall, here it is for your viewing pleasure. You can see Miss USA get booed after the jump.

RCTV is now TVes

12:27 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Controversia| Media| TV| Venezuela · 3 Comments

28 May 2007

As many lamented the end of a Venezuelan institution last night with the closing of RCTV, as Maegan told us, there were others who celebrated its passing; among them the government figures responsible for the network that replaced it. Twenty-five minutes after RCTV said its last goodbye at midnight, TVes was born. The following video from YouTube user Nicolas Maduro shows the transition:

If that didn’t move you one way or the other, check out the images chronicling the closing on Flickr by users in Caracas.

RIP RCTV

rctv.gifWhile most in the United States are remembering those who fought on behalf of their country today, in Venezuela many are remembering Radio Caracas Television which officially went off the air yesterday at midnight. The station did not have its license renewed by President Hugo Chavez, who stated that the station was a haven for those who opposed him. The station is now a public service channel. People on both sides of the issue performed their public service by hitting the streets of Venezuela. Hundreds of protesters gathered at the station’s headquarters to protest the shutdown and red-clad government supporters gathered elsewhere to show support for the measure. Protests were not limited to Venezuela. About 400 people gathered in front of the Venezuelan embassy in El Salvador to protest the station shutdown.

Castro’s Doctor: “Fidel will live past 140″

25 May 2007

PH2007052400090.jpgWhat was I thinking when I told you that Fidel Castro was on the verge of death back in January? I feel foolish now, what with all the new photos of him looking spry and his own doctor’s prediction that he will live to see the age of 140:

The leader of the revolution, Fidel Castro, will live past 140 years, according to Cuban doctor, Eugenio Selman, who has been on the presidential medical team for years.

Selman, who in 2003 created the “120 year-olds club” with the objective of uniting people of any age and from all over the world who desire “satisfactory longevity”, told journalists that Castro won’t need to join that club because “he’ll live past 140.”

God, I guess Michael Moore was serious about that Cuban healthcare system. If this is true, they can practically raise the dead. I guess all that celebrating in Miami was about 60 years too early.

Juanes and wife are no more

juanes_3.jpgIf there were ever a couple in the world of Latino entertainment that we thought was solid, it was Juanes and his Mrs., Karen. But sadly, after three years together and 2 children, the Colombian superstar and his wife have decided to part ways:

They decided to part after months of trying to resolve their differences, the magazine reports. They will remain friends and are committed to their two daughters together, Paloma, 4, and Luna, 3.

For now, the girls will remain with their mother, who is pursuing an acting career in the U.S. Juanes is recording his forthcoming album in America.

Whether the singer’s hiatus last year had anything to do with a struggle for his marriage isn’t clear.

It’s el mundo al revés when Juanes and Karen separate and JLo and Marc Anthony are still together.

Evo Morales : Enemy of Capitalism

1:19 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Bolivia| Politics · Comments Off

25 May 2007

evo2.jpgBolivia’s President Evo Morales may be pals with Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro but he’s no friend of the U.S.’s best friend, capitalism. At a conference this past Tuesday Morales said:

The transnational corporations always provoke conflicts to accumulate capital, and the accumulation of capital in a few hands is no solution for humanity,And so I have arrived at the conclusion that capitalism is the worst enemy of humanity. Instead of making more weapons and bullets to kill humankind, we must concentrate on producing more food,”

Hugo Chavez : President and Movie Maker?

9:20 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Movies| Politics| Venezuela · Comments Off

25 May 2007

glover_chavez_0523.jpgMaybe it’s not that Venezuela’s President Hugo Chavez doesn’t like television but that he like movies. After all Hugo just approved almost $18 million to finance a movie about Toussaint Louverture, the leader of a 1791 slave uprising that helped make Haiti the first black nation to get European colonists out. Making the movie with Venezuela’s dinero is African-American Hollywood star and civil rights activist Danny Glover.

Guillermo del Toro, Alfonso Cuaron and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu will produce five movies, some of them in Spanish, the Los Angeles Times reported Saturday.

Cheesiness overload: RBD and Miss Universe

3:05 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Celebrities| Events| mexico · 2 Comments

24 May 2007

In an event that could very well have me teetering between life and death as a result of an overdose of cheesiness, Mexican bubble gum pop superstars RBD will be performing at the cheesefest known as Miss Universe, this year taking place in Mexico City:

The Miss Universe Organization announced today that Mexican singing sensation RBD will perform three songs from their award winning album Rebelde during the two-hour LIVE telecast which will simulcast on NBC and Telemundo on May 28, 2007 at 9:00 p.m. ET/delayed PT.

The six young charismatic vocalists that power RBD – Anahi, Dulce Maria, Maite, Christopher, Christian and Alfonso “Poncho” will perform at the National Auditorium and sing their hit songs “Money Money,” “Carino Mio” and “Wanna Play.”

Not sure you can take it? Try viewing the video above and if you can get through it, you’re safe to catch the competition on Monday night. Hopefully no one will faint.
