Back in February we told you about the growing trend of college parties themed around stereotypes of race or national origin. Even after all the media attention generated by parties at Santa Clara University here in California and another at a university in Texas, it seems that some schools still haven’t warned students of the consequences of such behavior, as it’s happened again, this time at the University of Delaware. According to DelawareOnline.com, the controversy was made public when participants at the “South of the Border”-themed Cinco de Mayo party leaked photos on Facebook.com which
…depicted students, some dressed as gardeners wearing work shirts with “Pedro” and “Jose” name tags, and a racist slur scrawled across the back. In formal apologies posted on La Raza’s Web site, students said they did not believe their costumes would be offensive, nor were they acting maliciously.

All that shaking, gyrating and kicking seems to have had a negative effect on our beloved Ricky Martin, who threw his back out during a performance and has had to cancel tour dates:
He was told that he needs bedrest and has suspended his tour because of the medical recommendation, until he recovers. At a show in Laredo Friday night, Ricky hurt his back while dancing.
The performace of the Puerto Rican star was planned for last Saturday in El Paso, but has been postponed until further notice.
Is Ricky getting too old for all that prancing about? I wish somebody had a video of this, a la Juan Gabriel’s Humpty dance.

Spanish actor Antonio Banderas has been doing the promotion hustle and last night that brought him to Cristina Saralegui’s talk show. Banderas, who reprises his animated role of the Don Juan’esque Puss in Boots in Shrek 3, opening Friday, said last night on the popular Univision talk show that fame is the worse thing that has happened to him. Not because he doesn’t like being acknowledged for his work but because of the privacy he has lost.

Rene Perez, a 42 year old homeless immigrant from Guatemala was found on a road in Bedford, N.Y. nearly dead on April 28th. He died shortly thereafter of internal injuries according to a medical examiner but the death of Perez has raised questions with possible answers including police brutality and a pattern of immigrant deaths in the suburban town north of New York City.
Mount Kisco police have acknowledged that three of its officers met up with Perez after the 42-year-old placed a 911 call from a coin-operated laundry. The officers determined that Perez “did not have a police matter,” the Mount Kisco police said.
The county medical examiner classified Perez’s death a homicide. Menzel said the injuries showed that Perez was “struck.”
