Ex-president of Mexico aspires to World Bank

T026007A.jpgHere’s a name I hadn’t heard in a while: Ernesto Zedillo. Perhaps not the most well-known name to non-Mexicans, Zedillo was the much ridiculed PRI president that followed the infamous Carlos Salinas de Gortari, then fell off the (at least my) radar. Now it seems Zedillo wants to make a comeback in another high-profile role: president of the World Bank.

According to Milenio magazine, Zedillo will have to compete with some other very high-profile candidates, among them ex Afghan Finance Minister Ashraf Ghani and the head of the Israeli Central Bank, Stanley Fischer.

The World Bank will be looking to replace president Paul Wolfowitz, whose two-year tenure is mired in scandal over charges that he promoted and gave a hefty raise to his girlfriend, an employee of the Bank.

LUISPOSADACARRILES.jpgWhen is a terrorist not a terrorist? When your name is Luis Posada Carriles and when you have government officials across the U.S. asking for mercy on his behalf. Well it looked like it worked.

Yesterday, U.S. District Judge Kathleen Cardone threw out immigration charges against Posada Carriles, and ordered his electronic tracking bracelet removed. He had been free on bail, pending an immigration trial that was scheduled to begin this week.

Shakira: “I had lice”

11:29 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Celebrities|children|Health · 1 Comment

17207.jpgIn celebrity gossip of the weird variety, Colombiana superstar Shakira says she had lice when she was a kid, and in a recent event in Barranquilla for her non-profit, Fundación Pies Descalzos, she comforted a little girl who had them by giving her a hug and telling her own story about life with the little creatures:

The singer showed empathy with a little girl that had lice.

When Shakira went to hug her and take a photo with her, another little girl accused her classmate of having head lice.

Even the school principal, alarmed at the possibility of the little girl giving the singer lice wanted to take the girl out of Shakira’s arms.

Shakira wouldn’t allow it. “It’s natural, you don’t have to be ashamed,” she told the girl, according to radio show America Showbiz. The singer then confessed that she also had lice as a child and that her mom sprayed her head with insecticide to kill them. “Don’t do that please. Today there are pills that will get rid of them right away,” she advised.

Now I feel all itchy. The lesson to be learned: even celebrities have parasites. But more importantly: anything and everything Shakira says, does or even thinks is an international headline.

benedictsays.JPGPope Benedict hadn’t even landed in Brazil, his first intercontinental trip and his first trip to Latin America, when he started threatening to kick people out of the Roman Catholic Church, which he leads. When asked on the Papel Plane if he supported Mexican Church leaders threatening to excommunicate leftist parliamentarians who last month voted to legalize abortion in Mexico City, the Pope said he did support them and:

Yes, this excommunication was not an arbitrary one but is allowed by Canon (church) law which says that the killing of an innocent child is incompatible with receiving communion, which is receiving the body of Christ,” he said. They (Mexican Church leaders) did nothing new, surprising or arbitrary. They simply announced publicly what is contained in the law of the Church… which expresses our appreciation for life and that human individuality, human personality is present from the first moment (of life).”
Under Church law, someone who knowingly does or backs something which the Church considers a grave sin, such as abortion, inflicts what is known as “automatic excommunication” on themselves.
