AIDS_drugs_BR.jpgIn an unexpected move, Brazil announced today that would be suspending the patent for an important HIV drug, Efavirenz (commercially known as Sustiva), because of the price at which is producer, Merck wants to sell it to the country:

Brazil wants to import a generic version of the drug which is produced cheaper in India. The Minister of Health, José Gomes Temporao, said that Brazil will buy the generic drug from an Indian laboratory that already produces it, and that it will be distributed in the country starting in September.

“We are taking a big step and the decision applies to this drug and to any other when it’s necessary. Today it was this drug, tomorrow it might be another. If we don’t get a fair price, we’ll make that decision, he said.

diapers.gifA supermarket chain in Chile is accused of forcing its cashiers to wear diapers to avoid interrupting their work by going to the bathroom:

Going to the bathroom is prohibited during work hours. This is one of the unjust obligations that cashiers at the Chilean supermarket chain Santa Isabel have to fulfill, according to the Central Unitaria de Trabajadores (CUT) union.

A union spokesperson said on Thursday that the women working at these establishments “are made to work 9 hours at their cash registers without being allowed to move,” which requires that they wear diapers since they cannot go to the bathroom.

The chain is denying that they’ve done anything wrong. President Bachelet, where are you?

OjosdeBrujo_techari.cover.jpgThe warming weather here in New York City means more people heading out of their apartments to tune into live performances of hot music matching the heat of the sun. If their latest cd, Techari, is any indication, Ojos de Brujo (ODB) is going to be one of those bands not to miss. Their North American tour, running from June 20 to July 1, brings Barcelona, its Gitana heritage, and sound to your ears.

Recorded in Cuba, NYC, and in a studio at the foot of the Pyrenees, close to the birthplace of surrealist Salvador Dali, Techari is a distinctly modern reflection of the world today, a mestizaje of sonidos including flamenco, rumba, hip-hop with punk sensibilities.

Just as the title Techari, means free in the Gypsy dialect Calo, ODB takes us on a freewheeling musical journey with palmas and jazzy funk horns as the soundtrack. Take for example the cd’s third track, Todo Tiende, which takes traditional Spanish rhythms and throws in Bhangra beats from the Punjab region of India.
