Miss Mexico Changes Her Dress

6f9cfec0-d7aa-402c-b47c-e8b4ec1b8a01.widec.jpgMiss Mexico caused quite a stir with her choice of traditional dress for the Miss Universe pageant.

Miss Mexico, Rosa Maria Ojeda, presented the dress March 29, showing off the billowing, hoop skirt adorned with sketches of Catholic rebels hanging from posts. Rosaries and scapulars hung from the bullet-studded, bandolier belt; a large crucifix necklace, black halter top and wide-brimmed sombrero completed the outfit.

While Ms. Ojeda didn’t intend to make a political statement, many felt it was inappropriate given the rising number of drug related killings in Mexico and the fierce religious debate concerning the legalization of abortion in Mexico.

Chavez: Invest in Venezuela, but play by rules

11:24 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Money|Politics|Venezuela · Comments Off

18 Apr 2007

hchavez.jpgVenezuelan president Hugo Chavez wants to put to rest fears on the part of investors — caused by the recent declaration of “nationalization” of industries — by inviting businesses to invest in the country and in the region.

“You want to invest in Venezuela? Here we are,” dijo Chávez. “This government isn’t an enemy of the Venezuelan business person, and we want to let them participate, and were are doing that in different parts of the national business world.”

While it sounds like an opening in Chavez’s policies, the president was quick to clarify that there is one caveat to this offer: he wants business owners who are patriotic, not like the ones who he says sold out their country five years ago. He reiterated that Venezuela has finally “liberated itself from the chains of the American empire” with the nationalization of its industries.

Chavez also says that relations with the U.S. are bad because “they have declared war on us and we have the right to defend ourselves like we Latin Americans know how to defend ourselves: with our fingernails, our bones…the sovereignty of this land…we have the right to defend ourselves.”

More Latin Americans With HIV Getting Treatment

11:15 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Health|Latin America · Comments Off

18 Apr 2007

latin-america.gifYesterday the World Health Organization announced that 72% of those infected with HIV in Latin America and the Caribbean are receiving treatment, the largest percentage in the “third world”. The announcement was made at the fourth Latin America and Caribbean forum in HIV AIDS held in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The percentage of those being treated in Latin America and the Caribbean means that about 355,000 people out of the 490,000 known cases of HIV are being treated. This is a huge jump. In 2003 only 210,000 cases were being treated.

The increase in treatment is attributed to the lowering cost of treatment drugs.

tunick.jpgAmerican photographer Spencer Tunick is famous for capturing the image of the nude masses by the thousands in locales from New York to Buenos Aires to London. His presence isn’t always welcomed by local officials, and such is the case in Mexico where his proposal to photograph a gaggle of naked Mexicans at the Teotihuacan ruins isn’t to the liking of some:

“The application has been filed and the National Anthropology and History Institute is evaluating it, but it looks like they won’t let him. It’s not the last word but they have told me it will be rejected,” Alejandro Sarabia, who runs the Teotihuacan site, told Reuters on Monday.

Last year, internet giant Yahoo!’s proposal to to communicate with extraterrestrials via a time capsule at the Teotihuacan site was ultimately rejected by the INAH, as the entity feared damage to the ruins.

According to Reuters, no matter what the final decision by the INAH might be, Tunick’s spokespeople said he will do a shoot in Mexico, either in Mexico City or Teotihuacan. So he’ll do it even without permission? I’m all for subversive art, but I’m also about preserving sacred and ancestral grounds. What do you think?

17 Apr 2007

Among the 32 fatal victims of the Virginia Tech shooting unleashed yesterday by Cho Seung-Hui was a Peruvian student, 21 year old Daniel Pérez Cueva.

Daniel’s mother said her son was studying French as part of his major in International Studies. The family has not yet made the decision if Daniel will be interred in his native Peru. Currently the victim’s father is petitioning for a humanitarian visa that would allow him to leave the capital of Lima. Ironically when father and son spoke last week they lamented the violence in the world.

Today the shooter was identified as Virginia Tech senior Cho Seung-Hui, a South Korean native. Seung-Hui shot himself after committing the deadliest campus shooting in U.S. history.

Mexican army arrests over 100 policemen

6:19 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Controversia|Justice|mexico · Comments Off

16 Apr 2007

44b76ebd7a.jpgIn Mexican society, the profession of policeman isn’t the most respected. Like in many other countries, most are suspicious of policemen, who are believed to be corrupt, capable of turning a blind eye to any crime or misdemeanor for a “mordida”. In the state of Nuevo León, in Northern Mexico, the Mexican army has arrested over 100 policemen believed to be linked to organized crime, and involved in the 51 murders that have occurred in the state this year:

Among these murders, most committed with large caliber weapons, are 18 murders of policeman, some of whom are presumed to be linked to organized crime and were victims of acts of vengeance by drug cartels who are fighting for the routes towards the U.S.

Michael Moore Goes to Cuba

3:47 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Cuba|Movies|Politics · Comments Off

16 Apr 2007

cuba-dr.jpgMichael Moore of Fahrenheit 9/11 fame (or infamy) is at it again. His latest film brought him and some 9-11-01 emergency workers to Cuba, but not to play where’s Fidel. Moore took those workers to get medical treatment in Cuba. But it’s all not big heartedness on Moore’s part. It’s all part of his soon to be released documentary Sicko.

The film is an attack on US drug companies and private health insurance firms, which Moore hopes to show at Cannes Film Festival next month.
Two years in the making, the flick also takes aim at the shortfall in medical care being provided to people who worked on the toxic World Trade Centre debris pile.

16 Apr 2007

SP715.jpgIn this age of accessible technology, just about anybody can make a movie, even if you don’t have a camera — just use your cell phone. Spain will be the first country to honor movies made on cell phones with the first ever festival for films made with this medium this June, the Movil Film Fest:

The event, introduced in Barcelona as a part of the Internet Global Congress 2007, welcomes any type of short film made with a cell phone with a maximum duration of one minute, according to the festival’s director, Alberto Tognazzi.

Four awards will be given to the outstanding mobile shorts, in the categories of Best Short, Best Sequence Shot and Best Photography. The four awards will be voted on by the public via text message, and judging will be helped along by several prominent Spanish filmmakers.
