Latinos have Unique Relationship With Religion

12:47 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Religion · 3 Comments

faith.jpgLatinos have historically had strong religious ties. This dates back to when Indigenous communities were forced to change or mask their faiths and has morphed into the growing and diverse evangelical movements of today. Yesterday the Pew Hispanic Center and the Forum on Religion & Public Life released a study which looked at Latinos, their relationship with religion, and how that relationship impacts their politics. So what’s so unique about our relationship with faith? According to the report, Latinos across faiths view their relationships with God as very personal, with God playing an active roll in our day to day lives.

Renewalist Christianity, which places special emphasis on God’s ongoing, day-to-day intervention in human affairs through the person of the Holy Spirit, appears to be much more prevalent among Hispanics than among their non-Latino counterparts.
More than half of Hispanic Catholics identify themselves as charismatics, compared with only an eighth of non-Hispanic Catholics. While remaining committed to the church and its traditional teachings, many of these Latino Catholics report familiarity with supernatural experiences, such as divine healings and speaking in tongues, that are more typical of Protestant renewalist movements.

Bernal will receive the ILKA award and named as the International Ambassador for the Latino Commission on AIDS 2007 at the annual Cielo Latino benefit to be held at Cipriani Wall Street. Each person has to fight their own battle to get rid of the silence on our own families. This is a problem that goes way beyond just our families and a problem that every day has more to do with entire nations, populations, and huge numbers of individuals who suffer with this illness. My participation in dealing with this problem is going to be more active to help eradicate the silenceon a much more universal level.

2005-3-24-madres-plaza-de-mayo-1.jpgNearly a month after the 31st anniversary of a military coup which would change Argentina’s history, an Argentine federal court ruled today to overturn a pardon for two military officials, former General Jorge Videla and former Admiral Emilio Massera, accused of perpetrating crimes against dissidents during the course of Argentina’s “dirty war” military dictatorship in the 1970s. Sentenced to life in prison in 1985, former president of Argentina Carlos Menem later pardoned the two in 1990.

Following is a selection of images from around the web of the reactions to this landmark decision.

paraguay.gifLast year over 42,000 Paraguayans attempted to enter Spain last year, and 4.3% of them were sent back to their country. This, and recent reports of denied entry and verbal abuse on the part of Spanish police officials, has the president of Paraguay, Nicanor Duarte, so up in arms that he’s cancelled an official visit to Spain:

The surprising announcement comes one day after chancellor and Spanish ambassador to Paraguay, Eduardo de Quesada, gave a press conference in which he addressed immigration problems at Madrid’s airport, which Duarte would discuss on his visit to the European country.

No Doughnuts for Jersey Radio Racists

10:50 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Immigration|New Jersey|radio · Comments Off

25 Apr 2007

racistdougnut.jpgLate last month Jen wrote about a racist radio show in New Jersey that called for listeners to report and round up undocumented immigrants. New Jersey Assemblyman Wilfredo Caraballo wanted to put his money where his mouth was in terms of protesting the radio show and trying to bring it down. The way to do this? By targeting advertisers with threats of boycotts. Just as many advertisers pulled their dollars from Don Imus‘s show following his statements regarding the women’s basketball team at Rutgers University, advertisers are doing the same with “Jersey Guys” of Millennium Radio. Major names have pulled their ads, including AT&T, CVS Pharmacy, Verizon, Hyundai, Volvo, Fox TV Station, Sleepy’s, PNC Bank, Nissan Parts and Services, and most recently Dunkin Donuts.

Chicago the Latest Target of Immigration Raids

10:34 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · chicago|Immigration · Comments Off

25 Apr 2007

immigration.jpgYesterday Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) made the Chicago Latino community their latest target. Searching the Latino Little Village and its strip mall on the Southwest Side of the city yielded over a hundred arrests. Officials say they were targeting a ring that counterfeits and sells immigration documents in the area. Community members, many who took to the streets to protest this latest redada felt they were being targeted because of the string pro-immigrant rallies that have been held in the area over the past year.

It’s a show of force. We believe it was done to intimidate this community. We can’t see it any other way,” said Ald. George Cardenas (12th). “The number of people involved in this operation is just overwhelming.”
Ald. Ricardo Munoz (22nd) called the operation overkill.
“It was way overkill. They had machine guns, shotguns, bullet-proof vests. It was a huge, huge endeavor,” Munoz said. “They struck fear into the heart of the Little Village community.

Mexico City set to approve legalization of abortion

6:42 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Controversia|mexico|Women · Comments Off

24 Apr 2007

news-aborto.jpgAfter months of heated debate and with all eyes in Mexico on the capital, it looks at this hour as if Mexico City will make the historic move to approve the legalization of abortion. Mexico City’s La Jornada reports that voting is currently 46 in favor and 20 against on the bill that would make abortion from the first to the 12th week of gestation legal in Mexico’s largest metropolis. It would also lessen the punishment for physicians who perform the procedure after the 12th week.

As about one hundred pro-life activists protested, held vigils and fasted outside the city’s Legislative Assembly offices, the Pope put out a statement saying he

“unites himself to the Church in Mexico and so many people of good will, concerned about the Federal District legislation that threatens the life of unborn children.”

De Jesus, who has been under arrest since Friday, was originally held in a prison in Beth El Settlement, near the city of Ramallah then placed under house arrest.

De Jesus initially was arrested after climbing a six-story surveillance tower alongside the separation barrier, near the West Bank town of Bilin. De Jesus stayed stayed on the tower for five hours and flew a large Palestinian flag, as part of a weekly protest by peace activists against the barrier.Police were unavailable to comment Tuesday, Israel’s independence day, but earlier said De Jesus would most likely be deported.

Tito’s actions were part of other actions protesting the barrier which Israel says is needed to keep militants out while Palestinians say the wall is part of continued Israeli encroachment on Palestinian land.

reggaeton.jpgResponding to the controversy that just won’t die — the Imus in the Morning scandal — hip hop mogul Russell Simmons says he agrees with those who say that rap and hip hop music is just as guilty of degrading women and glorifying racial epithets against blacks as the comments made by the shock jock. Concretely, he believes that the music industry would do well to eliminate three words from its vernacular:

Expressing concern about the “growing public outrage” over the use of such words in rap lyrics, Simmons said the words “bitch,” “ho” and “nigger” should be considered “extreme curse words.”
