yanis.jpgVenezuela, home to one of Latin America’s most thriving television industries, has lost a famous telenovela star to violent crime, a social problem that has increased in recent years in that country. Yanis Chimaras, 51, was violently murdered on Tuesday in an unexpected attack while in the company of two other people:

He was killed early Tuesday in the Caracas suburb of Guatire when he arrived in a car to pick up his daughter’s friend, police said. Chimaras, who was with his daughter and brother, honked the horn repeatedly for the girl to come out.

At the time, robbers were inside the house holding up the girl’s family. They thieves came outside, forced Chimaras out of his vehicle at gunpoint and stabbed him three times, police said. He suffered a punctured lung and bled to death.

venezuela-iran03-a.jpgIn a move likely to ruffle some feathers in Washington, the Venezuelan government announced yesterday that it is studying the possibility of a future energy partnership with Iran with the creation of new electric companies:

The Minister of Basic Industries and Mines [of Venezuela], José Khan, told the ABN news agency yesterday that both governments are considering the possibility of creating electric companies in Venezuelan territory, according to AP.

“The [Iranian] businessmen that are here have manifested their interest in creating a mixed business which will allow Venezuela and Iran to produce the tools necessary for the electric company and for Petróleos de Venezuela,” said Khan.

The possible partnership is just one more for Venezuela and Iran, who, according to Venezuela’s El Universal, have already signed 162 agreements.

faith.jpgLatinos have historically had strong religious ties. This dates back to when Indigenous communities were forced to change or mask their faiths and has morphed into the growing and diverse evangelical movements of today. Yesterday the Pew Hispanic Center and the Forum on Religion & Public Life released a study which looked at Latinos, their relationship with religion, and how that relationship impacts their politics. So what’s so unique about our relationship with faith? According to the report, Latinos across faiths view their relationships with God as very personal, with God playing an active roll in our day to day lives.

Renewalist Christianity, which places special emphasis on God’s ongoing, day-to-day intervention in human affairs through the person of the Holy Spirit, appears to be much more prevalent among Hispanics than among their non-Latino counterparts.
More than half of Hispanic Catholics identify themselves as charismatics, compared with only an eighth of non-Hispanic Catholics. While remaining committed to the church and its traditional teachings, many of these Latino Catholics report familiarity with supernatural experiences, such as divine healings and speaking in tongues, that are more typical of Protestant renewalist movements.

Each person has to fight their own battle to get rid of the silence on our own families. This is a problem that goes way beyond just our families and a problem that every day has more to do with entire nations, populations, and huge numbers of individuals who suffer with this illness. My participation in dealing with this problem is going to be more active to help eradicate the silenceon a much more universal level.
