Nearly a month after the 31st anniversary of a military coup which would change Argentina’s history, an Argentine federal court ruled today to overturn a pardon for two military officials, former General Jorge Videla and former Admiral Emilio Massera, accused of perpetrating crimes against dissidents during the course of Argentina’s “dirty war” military dictatorship in the 1970s. Sentenced to life in prison in 1985, former president of Argentina Carlos Menem later pardoned the two in 1990.

A huge triumph for the left in Mexico, as was expected, Mexico City’s legislative assembly approved a bill to make abortion in the capital legal until 12 weeks of gestation. This makes Mexico the only country in Latin America except for Cuba to allow “abortion on demand”.
Following is a selection of images from around the web of the reactions to this landmark decision.

Last year over 42,000 Paraguayans attempted to enter Spain last year, and 4.3% of them were sent back to their country. This, and recent reports of denied entry and verbal abuse on the part of Spanish police officials, has the president of Paraguay, Nicanor Duarte, so up in arms that he’s cancelled an official visit to Spain:
The surprising announcement comes one day after chancellor and Spanish ambassador to Paraguay, Eduardo de Quesada, gave a press conference in which he addressed immigration problems at Madrid’s airport, which Duarte would discuss on his visit to the European country.

Late last month Jen wrote about a racist radio show in New Jersey that called for listeners to report and round up undocumented immigrants. New Jersey Assemblyman Wilfredo Caraballo wanted to put his money where his mouth was in terms of protesting the radio show and trying to bring it down. The way to do this? By targeting advertisers with threats of boycotts. Just as many advertisers pulled their dollars from Don Imus‘s show following his statements regarding the women’s basketball team at Rutgers University, advertisers are doing the same with “Jersey Guys” of Millennium Radio. Major names have pulled their ads, including AT&T, CVS Pharmacy, Verizon, Hyundai, Volvo, Fox TV Station, Sleepy’s, PNC Bank, Nissan Parts and Services, and most recently Dunkin Donuts.

Yesterday Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) made the Chicago Latino community their latest target. Searching the Latino Little Village and its strip mall on the Southwest Side of the city yielded over a hundred arrests. Officials say they were targeting a ring that counterfeits and sells immigration documents in the area. Community members, many who took to the streets to protest this latest redada felt they were being targeted because of the string pro-immigrant rallies that have been held in the area over the past year.
It’s a show of force. We believe it was done to intimidate this community. We can’t see it any other way,” said Ald. George Cardenas (12th). “The number of people involved in this operation is just overwhelming.”
Ald. Ricardo Munoz (22nd) called the operation overkill.
“It was way overkill. They had machine guns, shotguns, bullet-proof vests. It was a huge, huge endeavor,” Munoz said. “They struck fear into the heart of the Little Village community.
