Mexico: Get your naked bodies off our ruins

tunick.jpgAmerican photographer Spencer Tunick is famous for capturing the image of the nude masses by the thousands in locales from New York to Buenos Aires to London. His presence isn’t always welcomed by local officials, and such is the case in Mexico where his proposal to photograph a gaggle of naked Mexicans at the Teotihuacan ruins isn’t to the liking of some:

“The application has been filed and the National Anthropology and History Institute is evaluating it, but it looks like they won’t let him. It’s not the last word but they have told me it will be rejected,” Alejandro Sarabia, who runs the Teotihuacan site, told Reuters on Monday.

Last year, internet giant Yahoo!’s proposal to to communicate with extraterrestrials via a time capsule at the Teotihuacan site was ultimately rejected by the INAH, as the entity feared damage to the ruins.

According to Reuters, no matter what the final decision by the INAH might be, Tunick’s spokespeople said he will do a shoot in Mexico, either in Mexico City or Teotihuacan. So he’ll do it even without permission? I’m all for subversive art, but I’m also about preserving sacred and ancestral grounds. What do you think?

virginia-tech.jpgAmong the 32 fatal victims of the Virginia Tech shooting unleashed yesterday by Cho Seung-Hui was a Peruvian student, 21 year old Daniel Pérez Cueva.

Daniel’s mother said her son was studying French as part of his major in International Studies. The family has not yet made the decision if Daniel will be interred in his native Peru. Currently the victim’s father is petitioning for a humanitarian visa that would allow him to leave the capital of Lima. Ironically when father and son spoke last week they lamented the violence in the world.

Today the shooter was identified as Virginia Tech senior Cho Seung-Hui, a South Korean native. Seung-Hui shot himself after committing the deadliest campus shooting in U.S. history.

ronaldinho.jpgBrazilian soccer star Ronaldinho, currently playing for Barca, is the top earning futbolista pocketing $30 million in salary and endorsements.

Ronaldinho — as with the singer Madonna, the surname is all but unknown to fans (his full name is Ronaldo de Assis Moreira) — earned $11 million in salary and the rest in endorsements from the likes of Nike, EA Sports, Cadbury and Pepsi. Fittingly, the 27-year-old Brazilian starred in a Nike ad — “Ronaldinho: Touch of Gold.”

Boy am I in the wrong business.
