chavez.jpgThis past weekend Chicano labor and human rights activist Cesar Chavez would have celebrated his 80th birthday. While some in California enjoyed Friday off from school as an official holiday and others walked out of school, others in Arizona, where Chavez was born and raised marched. Who didn’t celebrate the late Cesar Chavez? The U.S. Senate.

Senate Democratic leaders joined pro-immigrant groups to chastise Republicans for rejecting a resolution in honor of the late Mexican-American labor leader and civil rights activist Cesar Chavez. The resolution, sponsored by two Democratic lawmakers and defeated, would have honored the Chavez legacy on the eve of what would have been his 80th birthday.

Why did the resolution not pass? Because of Chavez’s participation in a march against undocumented immigrants.

Maradona suffering from Hepatitis

1_216522_1_2.jpgIt’s turning out to be a really hard year for soccer legend Diego Maradona. First we heard last month that he was being investigated by Argentine tax authorities. Then, a few days ago, Maradona was hospitalized for “excessive ingestion of food and alcohol”. Now it seems that things are only getting worse for la mano de Dios, as he’s been diagnosed with severe Hepatitis:

Diego Maradona will remain hospitalized for at least 15 more days, according to his personal doctor, Alfredo Cahe, who says that on Sunday the ex-soccer player showed the beginnings of a “clinical improvement and improvement in analyses”.

“Late yesterday I became more calm,” Cahe told Radio Mitre of Buenos Aires, who said that Maradona’s entry into the hospital this time is “different from previous times.”

Cahe also says that Diego is still planning to take that trip to Switzerland Mala told us about recently, in an attempt to come off the toxic subtances he’s been ingesting lately and get back in health. Maybe he should start hanging out more with his friend Hugo?

Internet access in the Amazon

amazon-river.jpgYou might think that indigenous groups living in the Amazon would be the last people to need or want access to the internet. The original headline on CNN reads: Brazil to Offer Free Internet Access to Amazon Tribes, and the first thing that comes to mind is a curious “huh?” (crafty, those AP headline writers) but the fact is not only does the Brazilian government believe that internet access for the people of the Amazon is vital, the Amazonians think so too. Both government and Amazon locals think that the web is an effective way to combat illegal activity affecting the rainforest:

The environment and communications ministers signed an agreement Thursday with the Forest People’s Network to provide an Internet signal by satellite to 150 communities, including many reachable only by riverboat, allowing them to report illegal logging and ranching, request help and coordinate efforts to preserve the forest.

No Easter Vino in Venezuela

wineglass.jpgPeople can call President Hugo Chavez many names but a lush isn’t one of them.

President Hugo Chavez has imposed a ban on alcohol sales during Holy Week in an attempt to reduce accidents and crimes, prompting a run on liquor stores.
The decree prohibits alcohol sales on Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday next week. A more limited ban — restricting sales to between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., including at restaurants and bars — went into effect Friday and will last through April 9.

Well I sure won’t be celebrating Easter at Hugo’s house. First they take away my chocolate, now my wine. What’s next? A ban on Peeps?
