There’s something ugly on the radio waves in the Garden State. Some radio DJs (always the source of such high-brow entertainment) in New Jersey have put the call out to their listeners to report “suspected illegal immigrants” to the radio station, 101.5 FM, or to authorities:
The leaders say the radio station’s campaign – named “La Cuca Gotcha” – is clearly anti-Hispanic and may encourage racial profiling and other bias incidents against Hispanics.“It’s a despicable campaign and clearly slanted at Hispanics,” said New Jersey Assemblyman Wilfredo Caraballo. “The campaign describes us as bugs that have to be stamped out.”

Earlier this week we told you about how the PRD in Mexico City wants to see abortion legalized. As expected, backlash from the religious right in all its forms (Catholic, evangelical and others) was quick and bold, with groups of all religious stripes protesting yesterday, with some notable quotes:
The spokesperson for the Archdiosese of Mexico, Víctor Hugo Valdemar, called the legislative initiative proposed by the leftist Partido de la Revolución Democrática (PRD) and the Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) “absurd”, “bloody”, “antidemocratic” “fascist”.…”Man is not above divine law, and when he tries to be, that is an attitude of demonic arrogance,” added Valdemar, who said that the senators “are putting their salvation in peril” and that the women who abort “will have regrets for the rest of their lives.”
According to Venezuela’s El Universal, the only groups that showed even a smidge of tolerance were the Anglican and the Greek Orthodox churches, who advocated for more sex ed to avoid unwanted pregnancy.
El Universal also reports that a poll released yesterday shows 53% of Mexicans agree with making abortion legal, and a separate poll of only women shows 72% in support of legalization. Meanwhile, President Felipe Calderon of the right-wing PAN says the law “should remain as is”.

Go to your kitchen or bathroom. Turn on the faucet. Drink what comes out. Most of us take water for granted because most of us have ready access to clean water but this is not the case in a huge portion of the world.
The world water crisis is one of the largest public health issues of our time. Nearly 1.1 billion people (roughly 20% of the world’s population) lack access to safe drinking water. The lack of clean, safe drinking water is estimated to kill almost 4,500 children per day. In fact, out of the 2.2 million unsafe drinking water deaths in 2004, 90% were children under the age of five. Water is essential to the treatment of diseases, something especially critical for children.
This problem isn’t confined to a particular region of the world. A third of the Earth’s population lives in “water stressed” countries and that number is expected to rise dramatically over the next two decades. The crisis is worst in developing countries, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.
To highlight the international water crisis the United Nations has declared March 22nd as World Water Day. There are a number of events across the country and the world as well as many ways you can get involved. Visit the official World Water Day website for details.

Jennifer Lopez‘s first Spanish language album ,Como Ama Una Mujer, release fast approaches (March 27). She worked closely with hubby Marc Anthony on the album and maybe that’s why she chose to release a salsa version of the single, Que Hiciste (click on the link to hear it).
If you’re gonna be in Jenny from the Block’s old borough, the Boogie Down Bronx, you’ll have a chance to meet her and get your copy of Como Ama Una Mujer signed.
