The Nobel laureate in literature, who turned 80 earlier this week, joked that it was the first time he had bestowed a medal on a younger person, the official National Information Agency known as AIN reported.Based in Cuba, Casa de las Americas represents music, literature and other fine arts throughout Latin America. Writers, musicians and artists from countries across the region often are called upon to present colleagues with the Haydee Santamaria Medal from Casa de las Americas.
No one can be sure, but rumors were flying that Gabo (pictured above with Milanes) spent his birthday in the company of Fidel, according to AP.

This piece of news kind of lives up to what I’ve always thought of Consuls and Ambassadors sent to places where their role isn’t of the utmost importance. I’ve seen the Consul of a certain European country here in San Francisco eternally drunk, and in Barcelona the Consul of another European country eternally drunk or eternally unavailable. The Israeli Ambassador to El Salvador seems to have similar problems, as he was recently found bound, naked and drunk in the streets of San Salvador:
Tzuriel Rafael has been made to return to Israel after being found drunk and naked after participating in a sadomasochistic party, says local media and sources from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

U.S. President Bush continues his goodwill tour of Latin America. He hugged Lula, talked trade with Uruguay, and practically ran through Colombia as protesters burned U.S. flags. Today Bush lands in Guatemala where he plans to talk about poverty. Meanwhile Venezuelan President and Bush arch-enemy, Hugo Chavez is touring the places Bush isn’t. In Argentina he sort of took back his statements made at the U.N earlier this year when he called Bush a devil who smelled of sulfur.
In the rally in Argentina, Chavez called Bush a “political cadaver” and said he didn’t smell like sulfur anymore. That’s probably not the sort of apology Bush was looking for but oh well.
Chavez continued his tour in Bolivia with pal Evo Morales, showing love to victims of El Nino storm flooding.
