There is a saying that women hold up half the earth. Here at VivirLatino, mujeres represent everyday as my fellow editor and I come daily to the page to share our interpretation of Latino life. Today is International Working Women’s Day. Why international? It is celebrated world wide even with its origins dating back to 1909 and the Socialist Party here in the US. So yes, its political. Why working? Created at the height of the industrial revolution, women in the US and globally, especially those working in factories were demanding equal pay for equal work, safe, and fair working conditions. But really, all women are working women, no matter if we work in a factory or raising a family.
While not an official holiday here in the U.S. (come on, would the U.S. recognize something started by a bunch of leftists?), it is an official holiday in other parts of the world including the nations of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, China (Half a day), Cuba, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Macedonia, Moldova, Mongolia, Russia, Tajikistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Eastern Europe & Eastern part of the world and Vietnam. Many women receive gifts from their partners, children and friends.
For me personally, as a mujer, it is a day to recognize not just the women in history who have influences and inspired us, but also to acknowledge the women around us, our hermanas, biological or not, and the thankless little tasks that we perform daily to keep this world going round.
So from one mujer to all the others : I salute you hermanas. Pa’lante siempre.
