El Salvador’s bloody civil war separated countless families, some of which have never been reunited. But at least one mother and one daughter have found each other again — 24 years later:
It was 1983 when Francisca Quinteros, who lived in the La Cruz section of the town of Jucuarán, some 150 km southeast of San Salvador, left her daughter in the care of other people, due to the danger she faced as a young woman in a war zone.“The war was so dangerous that I couldn’t care for my daughter, that’s why I asked some people to take care of her for me. After a while, they thought I had died, so when I came back they told me they had given her up to a family for adoption,” says Quinteros, now 40.

Yesterday I received an urgent email from organizers in New England about Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) conducting a large scale raid at a factory in New Bedford, Massachusetts.
The owner and three managers of Michael Bianco, Inc. (MBI) were arrested by federal authorities this morning in connection with alleged hiring of illegal aliens. Another individual was arrested on charges that he provided fraudulent identification documents to workers at the factory. As a result of today’s arrests and search warrant, hundreds of MBI employees will be interviewed carefully to determine their alienage and immigration status. Aliens who are unlawfully in the United States will be charged administratively and placed in removal proceedings.

Mexican singer Thalia isn’t happy with just having a clothing line and candy in her name. She’s now going to tackle the media world with the launch of a radio show.
The Spanish-language show, called “The Conexion Thalia Radio Show,” initially will be a two-hour weekly program focusing on lifestyle and community issues affecting Latinos.
The show is set to debut on March 17 on ABC Radio Networks in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Miami and air on Saturday, most likely in the 9 a.m. or noon time slots.
“We’re excited about the partnership with ABC Radio Networks en Espanol, the best-in-class leader in national radio syndication,” said Tommy Mottola, founder of The Mottola Company. “A national radio show gives Thalia another platform to share her unlimited talent and creativity with millions of fans and listeners. I believe this will be a whole new career for her.”

Some media outlets are reporting President Bush’s upcoming trip to Latin America and the millions of dollars he’s promising for the region as a way for him to lose guilt for ignoring the area.
He said the United States will spend tens of millions of dollars to improve education, housing and health care across the region.
“The United States of America is committed to helping people rise out of poverty,” the president said.
Many children in Latin America do not finish grade school and many mothers never see a doctor, Bush said in a speech at the Ronald Reagan Building to about 400 invited guests, most of them members of the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.
“In an age of growing prosperity and abundance, this is a scandal and it is a challenge,” Bush said.
The speech came three days before the president leaves on a weeklong trip to Brazil, Uruguay, Colombia, Guatemala and Mexico.

Yesterday Mala gave props to RBD’s Christian Chavez for coming out of the closet, in spite of the backlash that this announcement could possibly generate. Now Christian is giving props of this own — to his fans. At a concert in Texas, Christian thanked them for supporting him no matter what:
“I love you with all of my heart. You’ve made my dreams come true and made me the happiest person in the world. Orientation doesn’t matter, what matters is love. Thank you so much,” said the artist as the audience applauded. At that moment the rest of the members of the group came out onto the stage to hug the singer.
That’s good, as I was actually wondering if the rest of them were like “oh, crap” when this news leaked.
I really still cannot stand RBD, but yes, it’s great that he came forward instead of just avoiding the question like so many other stars (ajemRickycoughcoughMartin) do. I wonder if this will push any of the countless other gay stars in Mexico (men and women) out of the closet?
