If you’re like me, you watch Spanish-language television but think that most of what’s on it makes you feel like it was created for people who lack brain cells. It seems like the people behind the production fail to realize that their viewers aren’t idiots, and insist on feeding them TV psychics, Mario Almada movies and lots and lots of novelas. I’m not sure if that will change any time soon, but this might be a good sign:
A for-profit venture partnered with public television, V-me (pronounced “veh-meh,” from the Spanish veme, for “see me”) is a 24-hour digital broadcast network carried on basic digital cable and satellite systems. The network will be partners with public TV stations, which will receive V-me at no cost…Programming features a mix of original productions and acquisitions as well as public television fare adapted for American Latinos, with content organized into four categories: lifestyle, factual, movie/special events, and kids (with V-me devoting 36 hours per week for programming devoted to preschoolers).

Last week Mala told you about a sighting of the Virgen de Guadalupe that occurred in a baking pan in Texas. La Virgen’s latest trick apparently took place in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, Mexico, when an image of her allegedly began to shed bloody tears.
According to Univision.com, on Ash Wednesday (also the day of the baking pan incident) the image, which its owner, María Guadalupe Salazar Martínez, keeps in her home (which according to Univision, is “made of cardboard, boards and aluminum), began to cry. First, the tears were “normal”, but she later began crying tears of blood. Since then, the home has become a shrine for devout visitors from all over the city, and clergymen have gone to witness the phenomena firsthand to see if it can be indeed declared a miracle. No word on that…yet.

Grammy winners Los Tigres del Norte have been known to lend their talents to a political cause before and now with a new single they are doing it again and not just in Spanish. According to today’s episode ofTelemundo’s Cotorreando, the norteño band will be releasing a song expressing their objection to the border wall between the United States and Mexico. And for those who continue to make immigration a Latino only issue, the song will be sung in Spanish, English, Arabic, French and German.

I’ll admit that I’ve been quite critical of the Mexican pop-tart group RBD, their music and their marketing but my mouth dropped open this morning at reading this news:
Christian Chavez, 23, of Mexican pop group RBD, announced Thursday on the group’s Web site, www.grupo-rbd.com, that he is gay. He says the recent release of compromising photos of him pushed him to come out. He wrote: “Although I’m scared and filled with uncertainty, I know that I can rely on the support of my fans, their love is bigger than all of this. I ask them from the bottom of my heart not to judge me for being honest and to feel proud of who they are and never make the same mistake I did.”
I have to give Christian props for coming out, regardless of the circumstances. What remains to be seen is how fans and parents of fans will react to the news. Will there be a RBD homophobic backlash?
