It seems that the best time for a pop group to make a comeback is about 20 years after their peak, when their original followers are adults and can now see them as something nostalgic from their youth, and not the banal pre-fab product machine that they were. Timbiriche, Mexico’s most popular 80s pop group made up of kids — which spawned the careers of Paulina Rubio, Thalia and other less illustrious members — is back and reuniting for a tour. And even Thalia is down for it.
After making a few adjustments in her calendar, Thalia will participate in the reunion of the ex-members of, the band with which she took her first baby steps in the music industry and this year celebrates its 25th anniversary.
Kind makes you feel old, huh?
Mariana Garza, one of the original members of the group, confirmed it but said that Paulina Rubio would not be able to fit it into her plans, however.
“The six of us that started out, with the exception of Paulina, will be on the tour the whole time, and most of the rest will be appear on certain dates.”
Given the precarious state of Paulina’s personal wealth, you’d think she’d be chomping at the bit for something like this, instead of hitting up the courts.
Say what you will about pre-fab pop, but I must differ from the opinion of an esteemed fellow blogger and say that RBD and their kind have nothing on Mexican pop from the 80s. It was terrible, yes, but it’s deliciously, enjoyable terrible. I mean, Timbiriche made a hit about a song that’s basically about going through puberty (see video)…
Yo no sé
por qué mi cuerpo cambia día con día
y siento que yo ya no soy la misma
que será, que seráAhora depierta la mujer que en mi dormía
y poco a poco se muere la niña
empieza la aventura de la vida
If that’s not groundbreaking then I don’t know what is.
Some ask “why would Timbiriche make a comeback”? What do vapid songs about puberty and Mexican nationalism have to contribute to today’s more sophisticated world? It’s not art, it’s escape. Escape to a time when today’s superstars were just innocent teenagers (not wives of American music moguls or [allegedly] tax-evading divas), just like their fans.
