Brazil the world’s most skinny-obsessed country

anorexia_narrowweb__300x479%2C0.jpgAccording to a U.N. study released yesterday, it’s no wonder why women are dying of eating disorders in Brazil. Spain’s El País reports that the South American country is the world leader in production — and consumption — of weight loss drugs. They even beat the U.S.

The number of people in Brasil obsessed with achieving the perfect body is three times that of the United States. For the Brazilian Health Minister, the data from the report “is alarming”. The rise in consumption of weight loss products in Brazil could be attributed to, according to the U.N. report, the level of internal production, given that in 2005 98.5% of the total supply of the drug Anfepramona, used all over the world to lose weight, was made in Brazil.

According to the report, Argentina is a close second to Brazil in the consumption department, making them the second in the world for the use of appetite suppressants.

Paulina gets dissed by Spanish justice

paulina-rubio.jpgBack in December we told you that Paulina Rubio was in hot water with the Mexican IRS for not paying her taxes (public service announcement: have you done your taxes yet?) and it looks like she thought she found a way to pay off some of that debt: by suing people.

Spain’s El Semanal Digital reports that Pau, along with Spanish star attorney Javier Saavedra (known for representing celebs and was even called on by Saddam Hussein for his defense), was out to sue her ex-assistant and some tabloids for “deshonra” — something which I guess can be closely translated as slander. Pau and attorney were asking for 600,000 euros and a gag order on the offending parties because of:

…three statements that bothered the Mexican celebrity terribly: the first makes a reference to her “homosexual inclinations”, the second is around accusations that she “induced Ricardo Bofill [Paulina's ex] to consume drugs, and the third that she was physically abusive to her ex-boyfriend.

lopez200.jpgI don’t read the New York Post on principle, so I wouldn’t have known about their recent transphobic reporting of what actually was a victory for a young Latina if it weren’t for Jack over at Angry Brown Butch.

An important victory was recently won in the struggle for trans rights, specifically around health care. Judge Sheldon Rand of the Manhattan Family Court found, for the second time, that the City of New York is obligated to pay for the sexual reassignment surgery of Mariah Lopez, a young trans woman of color who was denied this important and necessary medical care while in the care of the NYC foster system. The City is constitutionally required to provide adequate medical coverage for all children in its care, and SRS is a medically approved procedure, one that is often necessary for trans people. In the decision, Judge Rand wrote: “Mariah L. should be treated in order that she may go on with her life and be in a body which blends with the gender with which she identifies.”*

The blatantly right wing NYC newspaper chose to cover the story using tired stereotypes and slurs.

calle13.jpgMTV Tr3 wants to bring in the month of March like a lion by highlighting one of the hottest talents in music today, Calle 13. MTV Tr3 chose the Rican rap duo as their artist of the month and is celebrating them with special shows.

These include Videologia- a half-hour special highlighting their video history; Rock Dinner- where three fans in Bogota, Colombia, cooked patacones and aguacate, Colombian-style for Residente y Visitante.
Tr3spass – a concert in the heart of Time Square, including its first-ever duo performance of the song “Me Da Igual” with Nelly Furtado.

I want my MTV Tr3s!
