NYU Republicans Play Racist Games

Yesterday Jen wrote about an alarming new trend in colleges and universities across the country, racist parties. Not even my home city, traditionally liberal NYC, can escape the trend. The New York University Republicans are hosting a game called "find the illegal immigrant" Thursday. According the the event announcement on the college networking site, Facebook :
There will be one individual with a nametag that reads 'illegal immigrant'. This person has volunteered to do so and is not actually an illegal immigrant. On Thursday people will be signing up to participate and the first person that signed up and finds the "illegal" will get a prize. At the table there will be information and handouts on the subject matter to inform others on the problems that ILLEGAL immigration causes.
Like Jen reported yesterday, many students and other outraged people are protesting such events. There will be a protest tomorrow in Washington Square Park from 11am-2pm, the time of the "find the illegal immigrant" game.

Whoa, I can't believe this is at NYU. I expect to see a huge crowd of angry liberals at the park tomorrow.

You better believe it Jennifer. I've received dozens of e-mails from several student groups calling for people to come out to protest the Student Republicans event. (FYI- I'm a grad student at NYU).
It's a pity that the Student Republicans would do such a silly event like this instead of promoting meaningful dialogue over illegal immigration via a speech or panel discussion. Regardless of how one feels on the issue, events like tomorrows really only promote partisan divisions.

no...it doesnt promote divisions. But it does bring to the front an issue that they arent stating for who-knows-what-reason.
The real issue is that all these Latinos are proving that they have more solidarity to their own ethnicity than to the American flag. They are dividing themselves from everyone else.
Everyone wants the benifits of being American--except they don't want to be American.
It's getting hard to be a white male these days. Everything we do is called racist.
Personally, I find it scary that millions of Latinos in the US would promote open borders. All because of a common ethnic bond. That will turn us into a welfare state like France.

Wow!
So you don't find this even racist. I suppose mock lynchings are also okay. Going to parties in black face is also okay. But calling these things out is us charicaturing poor white males like you as racist.
As to your other point. France is not a welfare state because of immigration. That was a choice the French made for themselves. Their immigration problem is born from the practice of bringing in immigrant workers without providing a path for citizenship and assimilation. It results from their fear of France becoming a browner nation. It comes from the us and them mentality displayed in comments like yours.

DC- Last I checked America was a continent, actually two, not one country.
And your comment about it being hard to be a white male these days is just laughable - cry me a privileged river

The US has a better ability than France in integrating the various cultures and ethnic groups, but some would say that there is more difficulty recently.
The "Find the Illegal" event is not racist. A person trying to enter a country without proper documentation is an illegal. This is simple logic. Same goes for going to a sporting event or concert. You need a ticket to attend. Try to sneak in, you get kicked out.
As for "racist" college parties, some are indeed offensive, but I wouldn't go so far as saying that these students were being racist against everybody. Yes, the blackface crossed the line and they needed to be educated on that. The outfits and costumes would be satirical or very crude humor. Would the reaction be any different if an African-American club sponsored a hip-hop party, and they're all dressed up wearing their bling-bling and suits? Mock lynching was somebody's excuse for a pirate skeleton being hanged. Clearly, some people are overanalysing what we say or do or what is being shown. Maybe we should ban all the Scary Movies and every satirical film that's out there.
Plus, go to a nightclub theme party in NYC, Miami, LA, or Chicago, and you can find pretty much the same thing especially Halloween parties.

First: Anyone who thinks that "illegal" is a race is an idiot. No "if"s, "and"s, or "but"s about it.
Two: Anyone who thinks all "Latinos" are dark is a racist. I am a "latino" and am indistinguishable from any anglo-saxon type. Isabella of Castille had blonde hair, you know. So if you think that in order to be latino you need to be dark you are a racist.

I'm French. And i have to say that the welfare state existed before the big part of immigration. That's not the immigrated peolpe who decided of a welfare state.
And the legal strangers obtain money to pay the rent (if they don't have big incomes), they obtain an health insurance (if they don't have big incomes). Many people come in France for these reasons. And many people (and not only stangers) try to obtain money without the right to receive this money. For example, the people who don't have money pay their health spendings with a special card. But sometimes, when a legal stranger has this card he tries to pay the health spendings for an illegal friends from the same country.
We have also a law permitting to strangers, who are suffering of diseases (like AIDS) to stay in France for the cure. And there is an other law offering the possibility to make come your family in France if you're legally in France for these reasons (or other reasons). Some people tries to obtain benefits of these laws without the rights to have it.
And all these misappropriations of public funds by strangers (but also by french people) are making some french people racists. But these french people don't see that a big part of strangers are working for France. I'm in favour of this welfare state (also for the strangers who are legally living in France), but i know that's a big debate : this welfare state for the strangers, who don't have often yet pay taxes (because they don't have enough incomes)improve the racism in the french population.
I often heard that french people are racists, but i think that strangers have more rights in France than in a lot of countries. These rights fot the strangers make often the french people racists. And i'd wish to know how it would be in other countries if the rights would be the same for strangers.

Not all racists are Republicans, but all Republicans are racists.
