Five skinny models kicked out of Spain’s Cibeles

2006-12-07T155957Z_01_NOOTR_RTRIDSP_2_OUKEN-UK-ITALY-MODELS.jpgSpain’s Cibeles Fashion Show, the country’s most important fashion industry event, wasn’t joking when it said it wouldn’t accept ultra-skinny models on its runways. The policy was instated this year to ensure that tragedies like those happening among Latina models in South America wouldn’t repeat themselves in Spain, and today the decision was put into action as Cibeles rejected five of its 69 models for “extreme thinness”:

The show, known as the Pasarela Cibeles, decided in September 2005 not to allow women below a body mass to height ratio of 18 to take part.

One of the rejected models had only reached a ratio of 16, the equivalent of being 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighing less than 110 pounds, said Dr. Susana Monereo, of Madrid Getafe hospital’s endocrinology and nutrition department, who along with two other doctors was in charge of assessing the models.

It’s nice to see that Spain is living up to its promise to make sure that the younger generation of Spanish women not kill themselves in an attempt to be thin.

Last month, Spain also introduced legislation which would change sizing on women’s clothes in an attempt to foment a more healthy body image and change Spanish society’s perception of skinny=beautiful.

It’s about time that people wake up and realize that these models are way too thin. It’s not natural or beautiful at all. All models and a lot of young women are destroying their health in an attempt to meet some “criteria” of what some anexoric person has deemed beautiful and perfect. All women are different shapes and sizes. The world needs to start accepting the “real woman” instead of trying to put women in a box. I feelf bad for the ones who have died and “for what”. Starving yourself is not natural or beaufiful or smart. Wake up people.

I like skinny bodies too, but very few people can be skinny and healthy at the same time, so it is actually dangerous to set up as an ideal. A model should look fit and slender, but not a starveling!
