female_symbol_red.jpg1,619 rapes per year in Mexico City is apparently not such a big deal for the head of the Woman’s Institute (Instituto de las Mujeres del Distrito Federal), the city government entity that promotes programs for women and supposedly defends their rights. These words were pronounced before an assembly of representatives from the Equality and Gender Commission (Comisión de Equidad y Género).

According to Mexican daily La Jornada, when pressed by a politician from the PRD who emphasized the grave problem of women being raped on the city’s public transportation systems, the head of the Institute, Martha Lucía Micher Camarena, rectified her statement by saying “…even if there were only one (rape) it would warrant our work.” Media then got wind of the statement:

Fried Chicken and Floods in Jakarta

pollocampero.jpgJakarta may be underwater but that didn’t stop Guatemalan chicken chain, Pollo Campero from opening its first Asian branch in the Indonesian capital. According to a press release ,the locale opened its doors in Sarinah, a historical department store in the heart of the Jakarta’s business district.

Now don’t get me wrong. I have nothing against Pollo Campero. I have a branch three blocks from my apartment that I have patronized on more than one occasion but with hundreds of thousand dead in Jakarta because of flooding, fried chicken probably isn’t the priority.

The notable and possibly calculated absence of the multi-nominated Pedro Almodóvar, who waited until after the voting to say that he wasn’t attending, didn’t mar the event. Quite the contrary, as it seemed to call attention to the courage and humility of Agustín Díaz Yanes and the other directors who did attend. It’s really hard for me to understand how a director with such talent and who has won more awards than Buñuel can consistently disrespect the Academy and the Spanish people, who have given him so much affection and recognition over the years.

condoms.jpgBrazilian school children soon may get more than just reading, writing, and arithmetic. Yesterday the health minister of the South American nation vowed to place condom vending machines inside schools. A new study conducted by the United Nations body UNESCO indicated that most Brazilian parents are a-ok with the idea.

Brazil has already been proactive in HIV and AIDS prevention among young people for at least a decade including a globally recognized program offering free condoms and sex education.
