K.Rape_illus.jpgMexican president Felipe Calderón announced yesterday that he will be “unstoppable before the issue of gender violence”, as he declared the passage of the first federal domestic violence legislation for the country:

The law — enacted with its publication in the federal register — does not drastically change how violators are currently punished. But it symbolically underscores the government’s recognition of a scourge that is widespread but often ignored in this traditionally macho society.

Officially, the law is the first federal measure combatting domestic violence and other abuse against women, though similar statues were already on the books in many cities and states.

Punxsutawney Phil Predicts An Early Spring

punxsutawneyphil.jpgWhy are these gringos so happy? Because Punxsutawney Phil, the Pennsylvania groundhog who either raises or smashes warm weather hopes, didn’t see his shadow this morning.

According to German lore this means that we will have an early spring. The Germans believed that if a hibernating animal cast a shadow Feb. 2 – the Christian holiday of Candlemas – winter would last another six weeks. If no shadow was seen, legend said spring would come early. Since 1886, Phil has seen his shadow 96 times, hasn’t seen it 15 times and there are no records for nine years, according to the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club. The last time Phil failed to see his shadow was in 1999.

I hate, and I mean hate, the cold and the winter which is why I heart Punxsutawney Phil.

Does anyone know how to say groundhog in Spanish?
