248952468_eeb3503ad3_m.jpgVenezuelan president Hugo Chavez announced today that he will go through with his promise to nationalize the oil industry of his country by taking control of the oil fields of eastern Venezuela, currently currently operated by private U.S., British, French and Norwegian companies:

“What we want to do is negotiate…but I’ve given instructions that on May 1st that all of those fields be under our control,” said Chavez, less than a month after announcing that he was going to nationalize the country’s “strategic” industries.

Chavez also announced in the same press conference a new law called “La Ley Habilitante”, which allows him to introduce legislation, by decree, for the next 18 months. He also shrugged off accusations of attempting to take Venezuela farther into a dictatorship, and announced that the Manuel Rosales, says that this is all an attempt to make socialism in Venezuela a reality very soon.

Thousands march to protest tortilla prices

tortilleria.gifThe anger felt by Mexicans for the past few weeks over the skyrocketing price of tortillas reached a boiling point yesterday, when over 75,000 people took to the streets in Mexico City to demand that the government do something about the crisis:

During Wednesday’s march, protesters carried one banner that read “Calderon stole the elections, and now he’s stealing the tortillas!” Others waved handfuls of the flat corn disks and chanted “Tortillas si, Pan no!” a play on the initials of Calderon’s National Action Party, the PAN, which also means “bread” in Spanish.

In a press statement, Calderon’s office said the president shares the protesters’ concerns and pledged to “continue taking all necessary actions to maintain price stability for basic goods and services, (and) punish all types of hoarding and speculation in the markets.”

Mexico Has Its First Gay Civil Union

bandera-copy.jpgKarina Almaguer and Karla Lopez, both from the Mexican state of Tamaulipas, traveled to Saltillo, Coahuila to become the first couple to take advantage of the newly passed civil solidarity union status.

Coahuila State Assemblywoman Julieta Lopez Fuentes, who served as an official witness at the civil ceremony, said the law passed earlier this month allows people from other states to register such unions in Coahuila. “Same-sex couples from other states have been asking for information about formalizing their unions,” said Lopez Fuentes. “Right now, we haven’t heard about any foreigners asking for information, but anyone who is interested would have to show they are [legally] staying in Mexico.” Lopez Fuentes said it was the first gay civil union in Mexico. In November, Mexico City, which as a semi-independent capital zone has some of the same powers as states, passed a similar measure, the first in the nation’s history, but that law will not go into effect until mid-March.

Ay Mama, Que Bebé!

tonio192.jpgMy uterus hurt this morning upon seeing the baby called Super Toño, born via C section (thankfully) this past Monday in Cancun, Mexico. What makes Antonio Vasconcelos so super? How about 14 pounds 8 ounces and 22 inches? That’s well over two of my new baby. Super Toño’s mami, 23 year old Teresa Alejandra Cruz, has given birth to a relatively large baby before. Her now seven year old daughter weighed 11.46 pounds. Super Toño is healthy, drinking about 5 ounces of milk every 3 hours but he isn’t the biggest baby born.

In Brazil, a baby born in January 2005 in the city of Salvador weighed 16 pounds, 11 ounces at birth. According to Guinness World Records, the heaviest baby born to a healthy mother was a boy weighing 22 pounds, 8 ounces, born in Aversa, Italy, in September 1955.
