telescope.jpgWe Latinos will celebrate anything. Google will start to build the world’s largest telescope in Cerro Pachón, Chile in 2009 and should have it completed by 2013. The telescope, called LSST (Large-aperture Synoptic Survey Telescope), will be ‘dozens of times more powerful’ than any telescope in existence. Google plans on capturing more than 30 terabytes of images every night on its 3000 mega pixel lens and broadcasting the real-time sights online for public viewing.

Many Chileans believe that this will put them on the map, as Google carefully calculated the best location for the telescope based on many criteria. It is still unclear if this will help Chile’s economy in any way or just offer the country bragging rights about having ‘the biggest’ in the world.
