Our beloved JuanGa was close to reliving last year’s terrible incident – in which he “had a great fall” — at a recent concert in Puebla. Luckily, he left the building uninjured this time:
“I was going to faint but I did everything I could to control myself and I managed to do so, but I could not continue because I needed air,” Juan Gabriel wrote to fans on his Web site.
Puebla fans didn’t get to see the rest of the show, as JuanGa had to excuse himself.
According to a message on his web site, Puebla’s altitude made him ill, and he says that when he returns to the city he will make it up to his fans there.
Get well soon, JuanGa!

While listening to a local radio station here in Miami, I noticed that they are constantly repeating the fact that they have placed in the top position on the radio chart yet again. Not being an expert in the radio industry, I decided to look up that claim and headed directly to Arbitron, the official stations rating format used to determine which stations are hot and which are not.
In Miami, the top spot belongs to AMOR 107.5, a Spanish-language radio station. It beat out every ‘mainstream’ radio station in the market. I received my confirmation about the Miami area, but got to thinking about the other parts of the United States that are heavily populated by the Latino community.

While the U.S. may only now be talking about reducing its dependance on foreign oil, Brazil was thinking about it decades ago, and put in place a program designed to do just that. The genius idea was to pioneer a technology for vehicles which run on gasoline or on ethanol (alcohol) made from sugar cane. The BBC reports that Brazil is experiencing a revival in the use of these vehicles:
Ethanol-driven cars have been on sale there for 25 years, but they have been enjoying a revival since flex-fuel models first appeared in March 2003.Just 48,200 flex-fuel cars were sold in Brazil in 2003, but the total had reached 1.2 million by the end of last year and had since topped two million, the Brazilian motor manufacturers’ association Anfavea said.
Brazil incents buyers with a lower purchase tax on flex-fuel cars, which helps reduce pollution. However, some say that by using sugar cane to power cars, we are wasting valuable food supplies. And that it stinks. A lot.

We Latinos will celebrate anything. Google will start to build the world’s largest telescope in Cerro Pachón, Chile in 2009 and should have it completed by 2013. The telescope, called LSST (Large-aperture Synoptic Survey Telescope), will be ‘dozens of times more powerful’ than any telescope in existence. Google plans on capturing more than 30 terabytes of images every night on its 3000 mega pixel lens and broadcasting the real-time sights online for public viewing.
Many Chileans believe that this will put them on the map, as Google carefully calculated the best location for the telescope based on many criteria. It is still unclear if this will help Chile’s economy in any way or just offer the country bragging rights about having ‘the biggest’ in the world.
