overweight_tape_measure.jpgSomething great is going on in Spain: first the country’s most illustrious fashion show, Pasarela Cibeles banned ultra skinny models from the runways in an attempt to adjust the perception that being impossibly skinny is something women should aspire to. Now, the Spanish government is going a step further by requiring clothes companies to change the sizing system on clothes to better women’s health and self-esteem:

The program, designed by the Health Ministry, will also prevent those companies from using window displays featuring clothes smaller than a European size 38 (10 in Britain, 8 in the United States). They will have five years to phase in the change.

Taking Edumacation Seriously

graduation.jpgWhat is going with our young Hispanics in Massachusetts? Only 57 percent of Hispanic students in that state graduated in four years. The survey began back in 2002 and gathered the number of enrolled freshmen versus the seniors that graduated in 2006.

Education Commissioner David Driscoll
had this to say:

“Until we can make a significant impact on keeping kids in school, we’re not going to really make the kind of inroad on the achievement gap,” Driscoll said. “There are a lot of kids who are falling through the cracks and we’ve got to begin there.”

MySpace Mexico to become a reality

360063615_1be4928ee9.jpgSince the meteoric rise of MySpace.com, many have speculated on whether the company would take advantage of the enormous potential in Latin American markets, where there are users just dying to take part in the site but feel isolated because it isn’t available in their language of choice (let’s be honest, the interface is terrible even if you do speak English). Never the one to miss a chance at earning some millions, NewsCorp’s Fox Interactive is making moves to launch the Mexican version of MySpace:

Word of “MySpace Mexico” began to spread on Tuesday when information about the site leaked to entertainment news site Billboard.com.

Travis Katz, head of international media for News Corp.’s Fox Interactive Media, of which MySpace is a subsidiary, on Wednesday confirmed the development of the site to CNET News.com. According to Katz, the site has been “soft-launched,” meaning that a preliminary version is live but that MySpace doesn’t inform anyone of it and does not direct any traffic there.

According to ZDNet, the original MySpace already has 1 million Mexican users, and that these users will be phased into MySpace Mexico once the site begins beta testing. MySpace is also currently running beta sites in Germany, Italy, Spain and Japan.

Ecuador’s Defense Minister dies in helicopter crash

guadalupe.jpgEcuador’s Defense Minister, Guadalupe Larriva, died in a helicopter crash in the port city of Manta, some 150 miles southeast of Quito. Larriva, 50, along with her 17-year-old daughter, Claudia Avila, and two pilots were killed when two helicopters collided midair.

President Rafael Correa briefly addressed the press, by saying:

“This is a major tragedy. We ask everyone to join us in prayer for the souls of Guadalupe, her daughter, the pilots and the government of Ecuador.”

Larriva was the first appointed female defense minister ever in Ecuador, and she had only been on the job for nine days. Regardless of political views and opinions, this is a truly sad event for Ecuadorians and all Latinos alike.
