a10n1esp-1_mini.jpgThe cast and crew of the Mexican version of Ugly Betty, Televisa’s La Fea más bella, is mourning the death of their director, actor Sergio Jiménez, who

…died of an apparent heart attack, television producer Rosy Ocampo said Wednesday. He was 69.

Jiménez had been working as a director on the TV soap opera “La fea más bella.”

Ocampo, who was in charge of the production, told Televisa that Jiménez´s body was found in his apartment after he did not show up for the show´s Wednesday taping, the first such session scheduled after the holiday season.

“People close to him went to look for him at his apartment and upon noticing that (the door) was locked, that his car was parked outside and that it had been several days since he had gone out, it was decided to go to the district attorney´s office” to notify them of the unusual circumstances, Ocampo said. He also said that prosecutors “finally entered his house and found that he had died, apparently while he was watching television.”

Jiménez is perhaps best known for his role as “El Gato” in the legendary Mexican film Los Caifanes (image above).

Univision.com has a piece on how the Mexican entertainment world is reacting.

Mexican daily La Jornada eulogizes Jimenéz, saying Sergio came from a time when “actors were real actors”.

farc.jpgNon-profit organization Doctors without Borders has published a list of what it considers to be the “most forgotten world crises”, according to Spanish daily 20 Minutos. Among them is the violent situation in Colombia:

6. Colombia: To live with fear. Massacres, executions and fear are part of everday life for thousands of Colombians. To date, almost 3 million people have had to flee their homes because of the conflict created by drug traffickers and government forces, paramilitary groups and armed guerrillas.

Among the other forgotten world crises were the 25 years of militia fighting in India, war and natural disaster in Somalia, and increased urban violence in Haiti. The U.S. branch of Doctors Without Borders calls this list the “Ten Most Underreported Humanitarian Stories of 2006″.

Chavez Officially Starts His Third Term as Presidente

chavezun.jpgScanning the online news sources today, one would think that Hugo Chavez’s being sworn in for a third term as president of Venezuela was a declaration of war. The headlines are alarmist. Hugo is “tightning his grip” according to one news source, forgetting apparently that he was freely elected to his office. What really seems to be making people afraid is Chavez’s choice of words at his swearing in.

His right hand raised, Chavez declared: “Fatherland, socialism or death – I swear it,” invoking the Cuban leader’s famous call to arms.

Chavez also alluded to Jesus, saying: “I swear by Christ – the greatest socialist in history.”
