Latino Preschoolers Too Fat?

cutelatinosthumb.jpgLatinos tend to think of chubby babies and children as healthy babies and children. According to a new study that very notion may be hurting our children especially as they enter the preschool years.

More than a third of disadvantaged 3-year-olds in Chicago and other major U.S. cities are overweight or obese, according to a new study that supports the notion that the struggle with obesity often begins in early childhood.

Hispanic children were most at risk, with 45 percent either overweight or obese.

The study’s authors at the University of Wisconsin-Madison also identified several practices that may protect kids from excessive weight gain, including breast-feeding for at least six months and not allowing children to take a bottle to bed.

ievomorales090106.jpgIf there were any doubt as to what the Latin American left thinks of the U.S., here’s another telling piece of evidence: Bolivia has decided to prohibit the free entry of American citizens into the country and require a visa for any U.S. visitors:

The government of President Evo Morales approved a decree Monday requiring U.S. citizens to obtain visas to enter Bolivia. Morales said the decree “a matter of reciprocity.” The U.S. government requires Bolivians to obtain visas to enter the United States.

Argentine taxi driver beaten to death after killing baby

Picture%203.jpgThe new year in Argentina began with a scandalous occurrence — first the death of a baby who was hit by a taxi, then the murder of the taxi driver by an angry mob:

Minutes before 2007 got started, a woman with a 8 month-old baby was run over by a taxi. The child died shortly after, according to Clarín.

After the accident, the driver was chased by a group of neighbors led by the father of the baby.

When he was caught, they beat him and stoned him to death, and he died in the hospital a few hours later.

Police are investigating the case and have arrested the father of the baby. They also are trying to confirm whether the taxi driver was drunk, although witnesses say he hit the victims when he swerved to miss a pothole.

This is a huge story in Argentina right now. If you read Spanish, check out Clarin’s coverage, which includes video.

Brazil : President Lula’s New Year’s Resolution

9:25 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Brazil · Comments Off

lula.jpgNew year’s resolutions are always hard to keep, even the simple ones that most people make like losing weight. Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva began his second four year term promising policies to close the growing gap between rich and poor.

“We will remove obstacles so that Brazil can grow in an accelerated way,” Silva said. “Brazil can’t continue to be prisoner held in a web of invisible steel, debating and agitating, without seeing the fabric that holds it back.”

The irony? Lula arrived at his swearing in ceremony in a Rolls Royce.
