Chilean army expels Pinochet’s grandson

12:28 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Chile|Controversia · Comments Off

14 Dec 2006

1166016251_1.jpgYesterday we told you that the Chilean army had sanctioned dead dictator Augusto Pinochet’s grandson, Augusto Pinochet Molina for defending his grandfather at the funeral. One of the possible consequences for his action was expulsion, and the Chilean government was quick to decide today that expelling Pinochet Molina from the army was the way to go:

The Chilean army has decided to expel Captain Augusto Pinochet Molina, who gave an unauthorized political speech at his grandfather’s funeral, according to military sources.

The army’s Commander in Chief, General Oscar Izurieta, petitioned president Michelle Bachelet for the expulsion, which she approved immediately.

Personally, I am glad for this small victory for thousands of families who lost loved ones under Pinochet. Like so many others, Michelle Bachelet was tortured under the regime of this man’s grandfather, but in the end it was she who decided upon a punishment for this Augusto Pinochet. And I can only guess that if Pinochet Molina is anything like his grandfather, expulsion from the army is a fate worse than death itself.

Copa Sudamericana Brings President Bachelet to Estadio Nacional

14 Dec 2006

colocolo.gifChilean Presidenta Michelle Bachelet didn’t go to Augusto Pinochet‘s funeral but yesterday she did witness another loss in Santiago’s Estadio Nacional, where many were detained after the 1973 military coup. Mexico’s oldest soccer clube, Pachuca came from behind to beat my favorite team, Chile’s Colo Colo 2-1 and win the Copa Sudamericana.

Pachuca, Mexico’s oldest club, silenced a 60,000 crowd at the Estadio Nacional as they won the final 3-2 on aggregate to become the first Mexican team to win a South American club competition.

I think more Chilenos were torn up about Colo’s loss than the loss of Pinochet.

Laura Bush says Jenna has no Latin lover

9:00 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Celebrities|Chismes · 1 Comment

14 Dec 2006

PH2006071200483.jpgMonday we told you that Jenna Bush was getting cozy with an Argentine PR student. How silly we were to think that Jenna would be that edgy, or that her fam would tolerate her dating anyone from “south of the border”. Her mom’s press secretary says it’s all a case of wishful thinking on the part of the argentino:

But First Lady Laura Bush’s press secretary, Susan D. Whitson, laughed off the report, telling PEOPLE, “We have found that young men who talk to the press and claim to be the boyfriend of Barbara or Jenna are just expressing wishful thoughts.”

I mean really, who wouldn’t want to date the daughter of the most hated man in the world?

“He committed a serious offfense to our organization and measures will be taken.” The army also added that the in the funeral’s program, the grandson was not scheduled to speak and that his words “do not represent the doctrine or the official opinion” of the institution.”

According to El Mundo, the sanction placed upon Pinochet Molina could lead to his expulsion from the Chilean military.

factory.jpgWhen we visit our local supermarkets to pick up some beef, chicken, or pork to cook for dinner, we rarely think about who packs our would be dinners. Although it’s unclear how many workers at Swift & Co. plants in six states across the country were rounded up by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents that went down, it’s clear that workers are the target and not the big company owners.

The raids capped a 10-month investigation. Authorities did not say how mnay people were arrested at the plants in Greeley; Grand Island, Neb.; Cactus, Texas; Hyrum, Utah; Marshalltown, Iowa; and Worthington, Minn. No charges had been filed against Swift. In a written statement, President and CEO Sam Rovit said the company has never knowingly hired illegal workers and does not condone the practice.

90 years and life for hate crime against Latino youth

6:58 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Justice|race|Texas · Comments Off

12 Dec 2006

415556.jpgLast month we told you about a hate crime in Houston in which a Latino youth was brutally beaten and sexually abused by a white youth because he tried to kiss white girl. Now, one of the accused in the case, Keith Turner, faces 90 years in prison.

A jury gave a 17-year-old Texan a 90-year jail sentence on Monday for his part in a brutal and racially motivated assault on a Hispanic youth.

“The jury has recommended 90 years for Keith Turner,” a clerk at the 209 Criminal District Court in Houston told Reuters.

The clerk said Turner had 30 days to appeal the sentence and if it remained in place he would not be eligible for parole for at least 30 years.

Turner was convicted on Friday of aggravated sexual assault for the April incident in which the victim was sodomized by a plastic pipe, stomped and burned during an attack at a house party.

His friend, David Tuck, 18 was sentenced to life last month.
