Nelly Furtado is pretty hot right now, and she seems to know that recording in English and en español a la Shakira is hot, too, as she’s in the midst of recording a CD in Spanish:
“I’m in the midst of recording a Latin album,” Furtado revealed when she stopped by the MTV offices Wednesday. “It’s like, ‘Wow, I’m writing a song in Spanish.’ It’s really bizarre, but really great.”Furtado, who grew up speaking Portuguese, didn’t learn Spanish until she was in high school at age 14. Although she has sung a few songs in Spanish already (such as “Te Busqué” on Loose), this is the first time she’s attempted to write songs in Spanish from scratch.
Like Beyonce, Nelly might also be after a piece of the Latino wallet, but at least her first attempt at recording in Spanish with Juanes yielded a great song. I’m not a huge fan but anxious to hear what she comes up with.

Just last week there were reports that Cuban leader Fidel Castro was on his deathbed, again. A delegation of U.S. lawmakers are being told an entirely different story however.
Rep. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., said all the Cuban officials they spoke to during the three-day trip that ended Sunday told them the 80-year-old leader’s “illness is not cancer, nor is it terminal, and he will be back.”
No one has seen Fidel since the middle of the summer.
The real deal is that the truth won’t be known until one fo two things happen: Fidel shows face or he actually does pass. Until then all these reports amount to nothing more than static on radio bemba.

Last week, pop star Alejandro Sanz admitted that he has a son born outside of his marriage to Mexican model, Jaydi Mitchell, causing gossip rags in Latin America and Spain to go wild. Apparently, Sanz decided to come forward with the news himself after he learned that his ex butler was about to leak the story to press for financial gain. Now, both the butler and his wife have been arrested and accused of extortion in Miami:
Miami police have arrested two people that apparently have tried to extort Spanish singer Alejandro Sanz. The suspects detained are the singer’s butler and his wife. They are accused of extortion and theft.
The presumed extortionists supposedly threatened to sell the story of the singer’s secret son, fruit of an extramarital relationship.
As for the secret child, no one knows who the mother is, though Spanish television speculates that she is a Puerto Rican makeup artist, while Sanz himself maintains that she is a woman who is completely outside of the entertainment industry and the public eye, and wishes to stay that way.

In an interview posted now on Univision.com, Beyonce talks about feeling close to Latina culture, in part thanks to her upbringing in Houston, Texas. She’s trying to do a reverse cross-over and recording in Spanish because she thinks that Spanish is a “sexy” language (and no doubt because she thinks Latino money is sexy too). She admits to being a fan of fellow Texan Selena and Shakira, whom she worked with on the single “Beautiful Liar”.

18 Dec 2006The Latin Lover stereotype isn’t just for men and now a new study is being presented to prove it. According to the study which looked at the sexual habits of women in 12 countries across 3 continents, more than half of Mexican, Brazilian, and Venezuelan women said they wanted a better and more frequest sex life. The other countries in the study were France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Spain, Turkey, and the United Kingdom. The study was presented in Mexico City by the big pharma company Bayer, who no doubt will now be marketing some sort of sexual aid in Spanish.

Death by lethal injection is supposed to be one of most “painless” methods of execution of prisoners condemned to this fate. But this apparently was not the case in the execution of Ángel Nieves Díaz, a Latino prisoner in Florida. It took two injections to kill him and witnesses claim that his death was anything but painless:
The execution yesterday of Puerto Rican Angel Nieves Díaz has revived controversy over the use of lethal injection as a method of execution for prisoners in the state of Florida, as the the prisoner needed two doses of the lethal cocktail, which prolonged his agony for a full 34 minutes.Nieves Díaz, sentenced to death for a 1979 murder, took 34 minutes to die because, according to the state’s prison department, he suffered a kidney condition that impeded his body from metabolizing chemical subtances quickly.

The U.S. government is claiming that Cuban leader Fidel Castro is extremely ill and near death, reports Reuters:
Everything we see indicates it will not be much longer … months, not years,” Negroponte told The Washington Post.
As speculation swirls around what will happen when Castro actually does die, a Gallup poll shows that 47% of Cubans agree with Castro’s regime:
The Gallup poll released Thursday showed that 47 percent of the Cubans polled approved the job performance of their leaders and 40 percent disapproved.
The flip side of the poll is that the Cubans polled say they aren’t satisfied with the personal liberty they have under Castro’s rule:
Only one in four Cubans declared to be satisfied with their levels of personal freedom. By contrast, four out of every five Latin Americans said they were satisfied with their personal freedom.

The Chilean dictator formally known as Augusto Pinochet orginally didn’t want to be cremated since it went against his “Christian” beliefs. He decided to go for cremation instead of a memorial for himself because of concerns of his tomb being bombed and to avoid problems for his family and the nation of Chile.
Well wasn’t that thoughtful of him?

For those of you hoping that Hugo Chavez’s reelection in the Venezuelan presidential election would be called into question because of fraud or irregularities, you better stop holding your breath.
Preliminary reports of the recent Venezuelan elections, supported in new information by electoral authorities, show on Thursday the Republic s President Hugo Chavez as winner. The most recent figures of the National Electoral Council (CNE), with 98.29 percent of counted votes, grant the head of State 7,274,331 votes, or 62.87 percent.
Chavez main opposition candidate Manuel Rosales has 4,266,974 votes, equivalent to 36.88 percent.
While there still are about 2 percent of votes still left to be counted, those votes still couldn’t close the 26 percent lead that Chavez has.
