Penelope Cruz helps spread lesbian rumors

cruz.hayek.032105.jpgWhile the fantasy of hotties Salma Hayek and Penelope Cruz being lovers might inhabit the mind of every man in the Western Hemisphere, Penelope herself says that it’s all just a publicity stunt. Apparently she has fomented the rumors herself by acting extra cozy with her Mexican friend:

Penelope Cruz claims she knows why those lesbian rumors refuse to die. The “Vanilla Sky” actress, who has long been the subject of speculation about her sexuality, says she helped keep them going.

Cruz has been friends with Salma Hayek since she came to the U.S. from Spain about seven years ago. There friendship started a buzz, which grew a lot louder when she groped her friend’s behind at a press conference while the two were promoting their film “Banditas.”

“I grabbed Salma’s ass just to keep things moving, because everyone was a little slow,” Cruz said while promoting her new film “Volver” reports Australia’s Courier Mail. “And, of course, the energy changed when I did that.”

I guess Salma are the Latina Oprah and Gail, the girls with the friendship no one understands.

Campaign to keep undocumented children here

8:19 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · children|Immigration · 1 Comment

Mexican-Family.jpgIn response to the growing problem of deportation separating families, a non-profit organization is looking for ways to keep kids in the U.S. even if their parents are expelled from the U.S. The rationale is that kids should be able to take advantage of the opportunities that this country offers since the living conditions in the home countries of their parents may be less than optimal, the circumstance which motivated the family to immigrate in the first place.

Osvaldo Cabrera, President of the coaltion, told Efe “this initiative arises from the need to protect minors who have the right to, because they were born in this country, to grow up as American citizens and have better possibilities of development and social protection.”

“Family desintegration is a sad and cruel reality, as is the situation in which children must go with their countries to a country where conditions of poverty and extremse need determine their future,”he said.

So what’s worse, a family split by deportation but with successful children, or a united family living in poverty?

Thalia.jpgWhen performers are told to break a leg, it’s usually not meant literally. Someone forgot to tell pobre de Thalia who may have actually broken a leg. The accident wasn’t on stage though. The Amor a la Mexicana Mexicana was vacationing in Aspen with hubby Tommy Motola when she busted her butt on the slopes.

Beto Cuevas Sets Up House Without La Ley

Beto%20Cuevas%202.jpgAs a lover of almost all things Chilean (except for Pinochet)I’m excited to read about how La Ley’s frontman Beto Cuevas is setting up a home studio to work on his solo debut.

Para tener buenos resultados técnicos, lo primero que hizo fue construir un estudio de grabación en su casa, y ya se encuentra trabajando mucho para presentar este material a mediados del 2007.

I don’t know if I can wait that long to get a taste of whatever Beto will be offering up next so let us drool over this together.

Swift Raids Causing Less Latinos to Be Hired

9:38 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Immigration|Labor · 2 Comments

21 Dec 2006

swift-worthington-hd.jpgImmigration raids across the country earlier this month are having a negative impact on the hiring practices of companies. When in previous posts I have written about how the negative light cast upon so-called “illegal” immigration impacts all Latinos, this is a prime example.

Union leaders at Swift & Co.’s Grand Island, Neb., and Greeley, Colo., plants are reporting that the processor has been hiring fewer Hispanic immigrants to replace those caught in raids by the Department of Homeland Security’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement bureau last week.

In Greeley, for example, union president Ernie Duran told the Associated Press on Wednesday that of 75 new workers hired, 30 were Caucasians, 15 were Somali immigrants, seven were Hispanic immigrants and the rest were U.S.-born Hispanics. However, Hispanic immigrants have continued to seek employment at the plant, Duran said.

Almost 90 percent of the Greeley plant workforce was made up of Hispanics prior to the raids, Duran added, though he didn’t know how many were immigrants and how many were U.S.-born.
