For those that are of the mindset that any Latino politician is better than no politician at all, may I present to you Herman Badillo.
“Education is not a high priority in the Hispanic community . . . Hispanics have simply failed to recognize the overriding importance of education.Hispanics have failed to assume responsibility for their children’s welfare . . . Hispanic parents rarely get involved with their children’s schools. They seldom attend parent-teacher conferences, ensure that children do their homework or inspire their children to dream of attending college.”
The first native-born Puerto Rican (I’m so ashamed to say) elected to Congress wrote this in his new book, One Nation, One Standard.

When the dust had barely settled in post-Katrina New Orleans, the city was already buzzing with anti-immigrant rhetoric as a result of an influx of Mexican workers contracted to help in the clean-up efforts. Now it seems that this chain of events has led to an unexpected demographic change in the area — a Latino baby boom:
A little more than a year after Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans is seeing a boom in its Latino population, with many coming to help reconstruct the city.Health officials had not anticipated the surge in the city’s Latino population, The New York Times reported.
In a demographic twist, hundreds of Latino babies are being born in New Orleans to immigrant Latino workers, both legal and illegal. In a city largely abandoned by its doctors after the storm, this new population adds a financial strain to the already struggling city.
According to UPI, physicians are struggling to meet the rising demand for their services as a result of the birth of nearly 250 new babies per month.

The movie hasn’t even hit the Mexican big screen, but Mel Gibson’s Apocalypto is a big hit on the Mexican streets. For about 2 dollars you can get your own bootlegged copy of the film complete with people walking in front of the screen.
I know many people didn’t agree with my take on the movie but I might be tempted to pay $2 for a copy to review from the comfort of my bedroom, especially if I knew that mone y wasn’t going into Mel’s pockets.

Nelly Furtado is pretty hot right now, and she seems to know that recording in English and en español a la Shakira is hot, too, as she’s in the midst of recording a CD in Spanish:
“I’m in the midst of recording a Latin album,” Furtado revealed when she stopped by the MTV offices Wednesday. “It’s like, ‘Wow, I’m writing a song in Spanish.’ It’s really bizarre, but really great.”Furtado, who grew up speaking Portuguese, didn’t learn Spanish until she was in high school at age 14. Although she has sung a few songs in Spanish already (such as “Te Busqué” on Loose), this is the first time she’s attempted to write songs in Spanish from scratch.
Like Beyonce, Nelly might also be after a piece of the Latino wallet, but at least her first attempt at recording in Spanish with Juanes yielded a great song. I’m not a huge fan but anxious to hear what she comes up with.

Just last week there were reports that Cuban leader Fidel Castro was on his deathbed, again. A delegation of U.S. lawmakers are being told an entirely different story however.
Rep. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., said all the Cuban officials they spoke to during the three-day trip that ended Sunday told them the 80-year-old leader’s “illness is not cancer, nor is it terminal, and he will be back.”
No one has seen Fidel since the middle of the summer.
The real deal is that the truth won’t be known until one fo two things happen: Fidel shows face or he actually does pass. Until then all these reports amount to nothing more than static on radio bemba.
