Cuban government liberates dissident

061206_disidente_3.jpgRaúl Castro‘s government has liberated an elderly dissident — Héctor Palacios, one of the “Grupo de los 75″ – because of his poor health this week.

Palacios, a 65 year-old sociologist, ex-Communist party militant and member of the illegal movement “Todos Unidos” was sentenced to 25 years in prison in April 2003 under charges of threatening the independence of the State, undermining the principles of the revolution and conspiring with the United States.

Some are saying that Palacios’ liberation marks the beginning of fresh start in Cuba, in which Raúl Castro will be more open to dialogue and compromise with dissidents. Palacios says “not so fast”:

In this first statements, given from his Havana home, Palacios says that his release is an isolated incident and due to the seriousness of his condition.

“At this moment there is no will on the part of the government to release the considerable number of political prisoners who are living in very bad conditions,” he said.

“If they want to show that the words of Raúl — thay he wants dialogue — are true, then they should release all political prisoners right now.”

Palacios says that it is up to the Cuban people to create change and that he himself doesn’t plan on leaving Cuba or forgetting his activism.

ppp.immigration.texas.us.flags.small.jpgThe Texas state comptroller’s office has released a report that will satisfy and disappoint those on both sides of the immigration debate. It seems that in the state of Texas, undocumented immigrants

“have boosted the state’s economy by $17.7 billion and haven’t been a drain on state government.”

The downside? The same report says that they cost local governments $929 million in 2005.

Don’t Say Merry Christmas. Sing Feliz Navidad.

feliznavidad.jpgI’m a sucker for the traditional trappings of navidad. This includes Christmas music in both English and Spanish. According to a recent press release, I am not alone.

In a report this week in USA Today about the latest National Airplay Audience Chart From Nielsen BDS and Arbitron, “Feliz Navidad” has ascended to the #1 position as the country’s most broadcast/favorite holiday song. This rise to the top of the holiday radio playlists follows the song’s astounding pattern of continued sales increases in recent years– even 35 years after its release. The public’s love of “Feliz Navidad,” is also represented by the fact that the track is currently the #1 selling Latin song at iTunes and the #2 overall selling holiday download at the dominant online music site – for the second year in a row.

richardson.jpgEarlier this year we wrote about the speculation surrounding Mexican-American New Mexico Governor and former U.S. Secretary of Energy Bill Richardson running for President on the Democratic ticket in 2008. Well speculate no more. Although the only Latino governor in the United States has yet to formally file papers to form a presidential exploratory committee, yesterday Bill Richardson told FOX News that he is running.

“I’ve dealt with the issues that are very important today — national security, immigration and energy,” Richardson said in an interview with FOX News’ Carl Cameron.
