The bubbly will be popping and here in NYC the Times Square Ball promises to drop, bringing in 2007 with more confetti than ever. But what about the Latino New Year’s traditions that we practice as the clock hits 12 and we, hopefully, are locking lips with a loved one? I know that when I was a child spending many a New Year’s Eve in Puerto Rico, midnight brought parrandas and coquito (and yes the occasional sound of gunshots from Lloren Torres housing project across the street). When I was there I celebrated New Year’s twice. Once on Rican time and once on NYC time. Now in NYC, we do the same thing but in reverse. First we celebrate New Year’s on PR’s clock and then here on NYC time.

The Venezuelan government is looking at evidence that child pornography of school children filmed with cell phones has made its way into Caracas’ video black market, reports the BBC:
Thousands of copies have been seized by the authorities from street traders in Caracas since Wednesday. The videos, apparently filmed on mobile phones, showed 12- to 14-year-olds performing lewd acts, police said.
A video of post-mortem examinations performed on young people is also reported to have been found.
Few details are available but some of these films are thought to have originated in the United States, others in South America.
According to the BBC, the discovery of the tapes has had another unexpected effect: the mother of one of the victims reportedly died of a heart attack after seeing her child in a video.

Venezuela’s President Hugo Chavez is saying that he will not renew the broadcaster’s license for television station Radio Caracas Television, saying that the station and its head,Marcel Granier, played a key role in plotting coups.
“No media outlet will be tolerated here that is at the service of coup-ism, against the people, against the nation, against national independence, against the dignity of the republic,” said Chavez, wearing a red beret and fatigues in his year-end speech to troops.
Radio Caracas Television is one of the country’s oldest channels and began broadcasting in 1953. So that people don’t say that I blindly support left-wing Latino leaders, I have to publically say that this is disturbing. A free press is one of the cornerstones of a free government. I would have to research more about Radio Caracas Venezuela and see how free it really is.

JLo’s got a new TV dance show out, and so does ex hubby Cris Judd: coincidence? I think not:
Judd’s show is the reality competition “Dirty Dancing” on the Women’s Entertainment cable channel, airing Wednesdays at 10 p.m. EST. Lopez is producing MTV’s “DanceLife,” about six aspiring dancers struggling to make it. The eight-episode series premieres Jan. 15 at 10:30 p.m.Judd’s show was inspired by the ’80s classic “Dirty Dancing,” starring
Jennifer Grey as rich girl Baby and Patrick Swayze as poor dance instructor Johnny. The premise: Eighteen women compete at a summer camp for a dance contract and the right to play Baby — to whichever professional ballroom dancer becomes Johnny — during the finale.

The pre-Christmas immigration sweeps that ran cross country are continuing.
“Tienen encerradas a unas 70 personas, no dejan entrar ni salir a nadie”, dijo uno de los empleados que trabaja en el turno de la noche en la compañía Dicar, en Pine Brook, Nueva Jersey, pero quien prefirió no ser identificado para proteger su empleo.
Regardless of if you think that the raids are Hitleresque or not.
26 year old Brazilian futbol superestrella Ronaldinho has decided to hang up his soccer cleats. Currentky playing for Barcelona, he says he’s had enough of all the pressure come from the media and has more than enough money to live the rest of his life well. He said:
Lo que hago no lo hago por el dinero. Empecé a jugar al fútbol porque era lo que más me gustaba, soñaba con jugar en Europa.
Some say that Ronaldinho never got over the World Cup loss.

We recently told you that Texican Eva Longoria is going to marry her bf Tony Parker. People magazine reports that in a labor of love, Eva is learning the native tongue of her fiancé, French:
Eva Longoria may not be a housewife, but she is desperate for her France-raised fiancé Tony Parker to improve her French skills.“He’s terrible. He always wants to speak English,” Longoria, 31, told PEOPLE Thursday while in London to open the annual Harrods Winter Sale. “I try to remind him but he always forgets and says it’s easier and faster to speak English, but I want to understand.”
She decided to master French the hard way – in a classroom. “I couldn’t speak French before Tony. All I knew how to say was, ‘My name is Eva.’ I went to a Berlitz French school this summer, doing about five hours a day.”
And how is her French now? “Great!”
I wouldn’t bet on it. French is one of those languages that if you learn three phrases you think you sound great, and the French people in the room are secretly laughing their asses off about how bad you speak.

Angelina Jolie and her bf Brad Pitt spent the holidays in Costa Rica, visiting some displaced Colombian refugees and handing out gifts in the name of the U.N.:
Dressed in white and sporting a bright blue UNHCR baseball cap, Jolie called for more awareness of the plight of refugees around the world.“It is especially shocking that such a tragedy can go on, year after year, with the rest of the world paying so little attention to it,” she said in the Costa Rican capital San Jose, according to the U.N. agency.
The Central American country is home to an estimated 10,000 Colombian refugees.
“My Christmas message to Colombian refugees and to the millions of displaced people in Colombia is that the world has not totally forgotten them,” Jolie said.
Whether these celeb visits are just good PR for the stars or actual humanitarian work is up for debate, but if anything it’s good that the media eyes that are constantly following Angie and Brad are also — at least momentarily — focused on the plight of these refugees.

The Madres of la Plaza de Mayo, protesting with white scarves on their heads in Argentina the disappearances under Argentina’s military rule of their children and the children of others have always served as an inspiartion for me and other activists. Sadly one of the founding members passed away.
Nelva Mendez de Falcone, 76, died Monday of an unspecified lung problem for which she had been hospitalized for the last 10 days in La Plata, 30 miles (50 kilometers) southeast of the capital of Buenos Aires, the family said.
Nelva had lost her own daughter, Maria Claudia Falcone, to the 1976-83 dictatorship.
Christmas Day has come and gone but Puerto Ricans ,like many other Latinos, know that the holiday is far from over. We still have to look forward to New Year’s and in many Latin American nations, Three King’s Day. Many of our holiday traditions are based around food and drinks. One of my favorites is Puerto Rican Coquito. It’s like egg nog only a million times better. What makes coquito so good? Rum of course! Everyone has there own coquito receta. One Rican mami in Florida links to a Coquito receta:
30 ounces coconut milk
14 ounces condensed milk
1 cup Bacardi rum
½ cup water
pinch of salt
½ tsp. cinnamonMix all ingredients in the blender. Taste and [add] more rum if you like it stronger. You need to add the water because it will get thicker later in the fridge. Pour into a bottle and refrigerate well. Make ahead for richer flavor. Serve in small glassware.
