This may very well be the worse product I’ve seen all year. Green Card is an energy drink being marketed to those undocumented immigrants crossing into the United States.
“It’s a fact,” that people illegally cross the border, president and CEO of Z CORP, Jeff Weiss, told CSNews Online. “If they are going to come to the U.S., I don’t want them dying in the desert, I’d rather have them hydrated.”
It’s tagline: “Papers, we don’t need no stinkin’ papers”
Um yeah sure. I bet he made this product with the best interest of immigrants in mind and not the best interest of his wallet. Energy drinks are just alot of sugar and caffine are are bad for you anyway but this energy drink is leaving a bad taste in my mouth.

Could Dancing with the Stars hunk and 90s teen star Mario Lopez be dating recently-divorced Britney Spears? That’s what Spanish daily 20 Minutos is speculating. Please say it ain’t so.
It is possible that the American pop singer Britney Spears has a new man after separating from Kevin Federline.Spears, 24, had a “crazy night” with actor Mario Lopez, 33, according to American magazine People in its online edition.
Mario Lopez was introduced to Spears at a club called ‘The Mint’. It appears that both celebrated into the wee hours with friends.
So that means they are dating? I don’t see the evidence, but that could just be my denial talking.
Meanwhile, a British tabloid is reporting that K-Fed is out to sell a 4-hour long sex tape of him and his soon-to-be ex wife. Ick.

When I was on NPR two weeks ago, I said that the Democrats had not placed immigration reform on their to do list if they were to win Congress. Well yesterday Democratic Senator from New York, Chuck Schumer gave a preliminary outline of the Democratic agenda and immigration reform wasn’t there. Among some of the issues the Dems want to tackle include raising the minimum wage, the cost of meds for senior citizens, and lowering energy costs.
So for those who voted Democrat in the hopes of comprehensive immigration reform and for those undocumented immigrants who put their hopes in the Democrats to grant them a path to citizenship, seems like the Dems have let them down……again.

People en Español reports that Paulina Rubio isn’t being shy with details about her engagement and upcoming wedding to her Spanish boyfriend Colate. Pau spills the beans:
“We are very, very sure that we want it to be in Spring. Spring is the most romantic season for this type of ceremony, the singer revealed to ¡Hola! magazine. “I’ll be dressed totally in white, I want a very simple design because that day I want to shine more than the dress. I’ll have a few dresses ready and I won’t decide which one I’ll wear until the last minute,” added the future bride…
Three wedding dresses? Way to keep it down to earth, Pau. But could we expect anything less from la chica dorada?
Pau went on to tell details of the romantic marriage proposal that was sprung on her by her boyfriend in Paris, of all cliche places:
“It was very romantic, I was really nervous, Colate didn’t speak, his lips were dry and his face was white,” she said, and added that when he gave her the ring her reaction was to scream. “I started screaming and jumping up and down like a crazy person. We hugged and couldn’t stop, until Colate asked me: ‘Well, yes or no?’ ”. And as if that weren’t enough, the two sealed their engagement at the Eiffel Tower. “We went underneath the Eiffel Tower and right in the middle, we got engaged.”
I think I am going to be ill.

VL (I) had the opportunity to see Julieta Venegas in concert last night at San Francisco‘s Fillmore Theatre. Since no one invited us as press, I decided to attend the sold-out show as a “civilian” since I adore the Julieta. Unfortunately, no cameras were allowed so I don’t have any great pics. I wouldn’t have anyway, since I am only 5’2″ and the stage was rushed by some of the tallest Latinos I’ve ever seen in my life, impeding my view of what was a really good show. Fortunately, however, a kind reader named Brian has donated his photos, one of which is featured here.
I planned on getting to the place late and deliberately missing the opening band, Los Abandoned from Van Nuys, California. Not because I had heard bad things, but because I just felt like cutting to the chase. That didn’t happen, and I am really glad it didn’t, as I LOVED Los Abandoned. They are a punk/surf/pop (this is what they sounds like to me, no idea what they are supposed to sound like to everyone else) girl-led outfit who sing in both Spanish and English.

Yesterday the Latin American and Caribbean Congress for Puerto Rico´s Independence closed in Panama, with the participation of more than 200 delegates from 22 countries.
“Puerto Rico is the only Latin American region remaining under colonial regimen. For Latin Americans, helping to correct that anomaly should be a matter of principles, a continental priority,” stated Panamanian President Martin Torrijos.
Puerto Rico, legally is known as a “Free Associated State” of the United States (which I would argue translates colony) and has been occupied by the United States since 1898.
So Puerto Ricans, on the island and in the diaspora know that many Latin American nations understand the true nature of the situation. Too bad the U.S. and its government hasn’t accepted it.

Rarely does a news story bring together the issues of immigration and those families who lost loved ones in the 9-11-01 attacks. Yet some of the most vulnerable victims left in the 9-11-01 aftermath are undocumented immigrant relatives of those who lost their lives in the attacks. There are at least 25 such families (the number is likely higher)and some of those families are hoping that Congress will listen to advocates who are urging the passage of legislation that would grant permanent residence status to the illegal immigrants who lost family members on Sept. 11.

17 Nov 2006As loyal readers may have noticed, we are becoming more and more addicted to YouTube. My number one fascination lately is reliving some old Rock en español videos by my favorite bands, and digging up some that I never even knew existed.
Yeah, makes one feel a little old to see how dated all of these are, but it brings back great memories of when little old me was pretending to be a Rock en español DJ back in Tejas (don’t laugh). I was terrible, but now with YouTube I can feel more like a VJ for all of you. Rock en tu idioma was a great movement, and there’s nothing like a few nostalic hits to kick the weekend off right. Here are three of my favorites to take you back a few years and get your weekend going, 80s style.
Please leave your video requests in the comments section and we’ll try our best to dig in the crates of YouTube to find your faves, and post them here next Friday.

Activists inside the U.S. aren’t the only ones calling out big box retailer Wal-Mart. According to the Latin Americanist:
Around 250 demonstrators stormed a Wal-Mart store outside Mexico City on Tuesday alleging that Wal-Mart’s low prices have come at the cost of hurting local farmers and markets. In addition, anti-Wal-Mart activists say that the company’s plans to open its own banking unit would cause a monopoly on Mexican remittances. In response, Wal-Mart de Mexico is rolling out a major ad campaign designed to convince Mexicans that their stores are beneficial for the country’s economy.
