The Spanish Food Safety Agency (AESA) is threatening to take action against Burger King for violating an agreement between the Spanish Health Ministry and the fast food chain in which it promised not to use advertising to promote “large portions”. According to 20 Minutos, the agreement is a Spanish Health Ministry initiative to help bring down obesity rates in the country.
Apparently the BK is not holding up its end of the bargain, launching a new campaign a couple of weeks ago to promote their gargantuan “XXL Burger” (with a whopping 971 calories) in Spain, an initiative that was denounced by consumer groups and has caused polemic among health-related public entities.
Now just weeks after that controversy, it appears that Burger King is pushing the envelope yet again, with advertising supporting its new “Triple Whopper”, which boasts a mere 820 calories and three beef patties. Barf.
AESA is analyzing its options as to which measures can be taken against Burger King, while the chain says, via press release:
“Nuestra filosofía se resume en la frase ‘Como tú quieras’, en la que los gustos e intereses de nuestros clientes priman por encima de todo.”
“Our philosophy comes down to the phrase “The way you like it” (”Have it your way” in the U.S.), in which the tastes and interests of our customers come before anything else.”
Great philosophy. Wanna be obese? Have it your way. The best part is that the products are still on the website, and next to the Whopper XXL and Big King XXL are descriptions which seem to imply that these products make you “stronger”:
Whopper® XXL
A Whopper with everything and two enormous portions of flame-broiled meat will give you all the energy you need to “eat the world”.Big King® XXL
Because sometimes you need a lot more strength, eat these two enormous and juicy portions of meat.
So remember, if you are feeling tired after Thanksgiving turkey, eat a Whopper to recharge your batteries.
