17 Nov 2006As loyal readers may have noticed, we are becoming more and more addicted to YouTube. My number one fascination lately is reliving some old Rock en español videos by my favorite bands, and digging up some that I never even knew existed.
Yeah, makes one feel a little old to see how dated all of these are, but it brings back great memories of when little old me was pretending to be a Rock en español DJ back in Tejas (don’t laugh). I was terrible, but now with YouTube I can feel more like a VJ for all of you. Rock en tu idioma was a great movement, and there’s nothing like a few nostalic hits to kick the weekend off right. Here are three of my favorites to take you back a few years and get your weekend going, 80s style.
Please leave your video requests in the comments section and we’ll try our best to dig in the crates of YouTube to find your faves, and post them here next Friday.

Activists inside the U.S. aren’t the only ones calling out big box retailer Wal-Mart. According to the Latin Americanist:
Around 250 demonstrators stormed a Wal-Mart store outside Mexico City on Tuesday alleging that Wal-Mart’s low prices have come at the cost of hurting local farmers and markets. In addition, anti-Wal-Mart activists say that the company’s plans to open its own banking unit would cause a monopoly on Mexican remittances. In response, Wal-Mart de Mexico is rolling out a major ad campaign designed to convince Mexicans that their stores are beneficial for the country’s economy.

Another model has fallen victim to the fashion industry’s and society’s obsession with uber skinniness and died from complications because of anorexia. Brasilera Ana Carolina Reston, 21, died Tuesday this week in a Sao Paulo hospital from a generalized infection caused by anorexia. Ana Carolina, who stood at about 5 feet 8 inches, weighed only 88 pounds at the time of her death. This weight is considered normal, but only if you’re a 12-year-old girl no more than about 5 feet tall.
Additionally Ana Carolina’s body-mass-index was 13.5 while the World Health Organization considers anyone with a BMI below 18.5 underweight. A BMI below 17.5 being one of the criteria for the diagnosis of anorexia nervosa and a BMI nearing 15 is usually used as an indicator for starvation.
