Weekend Película Pick : Pedro Almodóvar’s Volver

volver.jpg The latest child to spring from the mind of Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar, Volver (trailer after the jump), is not to be missed. The story, spun with bold intricate twists as only Almodóvar knows how, tells the story of three generations of women of La Mancha, Spain. The spectacular cast is led by la bella y talentosa Penelope Cruz in the role of Raimunda. Raimunda, like her mother played by Carmen Maura, like her sister played by Lola Dueñas, and like her daughter played by Yohana Cobo, have all been wronged by men and all hold secrets about just how deep those wrongs are. These wrongs committed by the nearly absent men are shrouded in further mystery by a culture of death.

But the culture of death presented here by Almodóvar and interpreted by the actors isn’t a dark one. Death and returning from the dead are as natural as life. In fact Almodóvar says that film is a tribute to the social rites practices by his people with regard to death and the dead and that making the film helped him look at death without fear, although he admits to not understand or accept it.

277391511_48ea8c0e7f_m.jpgThe hottest video on YouTube right now is a clip called Free Hugs Campaign in which a man who calls himself “Juan Mann” advertises via a posterboard that he’s giving out free hugs. Some people take him up on the offer, but eventually he’s asked to leave by the authorities. The video has been viewed nearly 6 million times and its message has gone around the world. Now, people in other countries are taking up Juan’s hugging initiative and are offering free hugs. Following are a few examples of “Abrazos Gratis” campaigns in Latin America (more after the jump):

Hear Mamita Mala on NPR’s Latino USA

282035459_m.jpgVL East Coast Editor Mamita Mala was a guest on NPR’s Latino USA radio show yesterday talking about the Latino vote in this year’s elections. Mala threw down with a Latina republican who claims that “Latinos are Republicans, they just don’t know it yet” and talked about how many Latino young people disenfranchised by both political parties. Check out the show on the Latino USA website.

If you are listening to the complete show, you can hear Mala after Univision’s Maria Elena Salinas‘ take on Latino voter intimidation. Immediately after the Latino vote segment, you can hear authors Carolina Gonzalez and Seth Kugel talk about their new book, Nueva York: The Complete Guide to Latino Life in the Five Boroughs, which I am totally buying.

And if you’ve never heard it before, Latino USA is a great show. It should be required weekly listening.

Mexico City backs Same-sex Civil Unions

8:41 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · GLBT| mexico · 3 Comments

gay_marriage.jpgThe assembly of Mexico City passed a law clearing the way for recognizing civil unions between same-sex couples. While this is in no way a gay marriage law, it certainly is groundbreaking legislation in the morally conservative capital city of Mexico. Mexico City Mayor Alejandro Encinas is widely expected to ratify the law.

Under the law, Mexico City’s gay couples who register their union with civil authorities will gain access to inheritance and pension rights.
Unmarried heterosexual couples can also register under the same law.
A similar bill is being debated by lawmakers in Mexico’s northern state of Coahuila, bordering Texas.

As the law was being passed inside, outside many protested calling the law legalizing unnatural acts.
