The Governator just won’t go away. After hitting the polls last night, the only thing I had a really sinking feeling about was my state’s gubernatorial race. Arnold’s opponent — a man who makes John Kerry seem edgy — milktoast Phil Angelides, didn’t stand a chance in hell. He didn’t have the charisma, that was clear, but apparently he also didn’t have Arnie’s money. Reports say Angelides blew most of his bank in the primaries and didn’t have much to spend closer to election day. No wonder I can’t remember even seeing one ad for him, but I guess he figured that the San Francisco Bay area was a given for him. He was wrong, as the Bay ended up pretty much split between him and Arnie, though (not surprisingly) the city and county of San Francisco voted 63% in favor of Angelides.
So, here in California we’re preparing for a full term of bad pronunciation, xenophobic/racist comments and feet in mouths as we assimilate the sad fact that we’ll begin another year with a rich washed up actor as our leader.

A quick question for you Jennifer from someone who knows virtually nothing about Californian politics- what aspects of Arnold’s policies led to his easy win last night? Money and looks can take a politician so far but surely his policies had something to do with it. (Or is that assessment naively wrong?!)

Well I’m not from California and my name is not Jennifer but I think a huge problem was that the Angelides campaign was incredibly weak and unable to get its message out. People are more likely to vote for the status quo than someone they don’t know at all.

Erwin, I don’t know much about California politics either — just what I read up on to vote. It seems that Arnie won because of a) his “moderate” agenda (mixing all the liberal wackies here in the Bay Area and L.A. with the rest of the state you get “moderate”) and distancing himself from Bush and b) rallying for causes that both Dems and Republicans tend to agree on: improvements in infrastracture and security (less traffic, more seismic safety etc.) c.) he struck deals with Democrats on liberal issues like raising the minimum wage.
Anyway, I don’t know much but these are few of the factors that I think may have contributed to the win. That and $$$ and the fact that Angelides has no personality.
