Paupau se nos casa. Latino pop’s “Golden Girl”, Paulina Rubio, is allegedly preparing a wedding ceremony with her Spanish bf Colate, according to the groom-to-be’s father, reports People en Español:
“My son told me a few weeks ago that Paulina and he were getting married,” revealed José Ignacio Vallejo-Nájera to Spanish magazine ¡Hola!. “The wedding is being planned as they want it: the place, the organizing…” he said, after mentioning that the maid of honor would be Colate’s mother.
People en Español apparently tried to confirm the rumor with Pau’s PR guy but no dice, he isn’t saying anything.
We can’t imagine what a Paulina Rubio wedding will be like. She’s such a diva and already has to be such a protagonist in everything she does, we can only guess that Pau will be a Latina bridezilla.

Life for many transgender people in Spain could get a little bit easier thanks to a bill passed by the lower house of Spain’s parliament in Madrid. The bill would let transsexuals change their officially registered gender from male to female or vice versa without undergoing sex-change surgery. There are a few hurdles that need to be jumped though. First the Spanish
Senate needs to pass the bill. Additionally:
Transsexuals who want to change their gender listing in civil registries will need a doctor’s certificate stating they have been diagnosed as having a gender-identity disorder that they believe they were born the wrong sex. They must change their first name to one of the other sex at the same time.Another condition is that the person must prove they have undergone hormonal or other medical treatment for at least two years to encourage the change of identity. Transsexuals unable to receive treatment due to age or health problems will be exempted. Applicants must be aged 18 or older.

Another proposal that was passed by voters yesterday was a ballot proposal in Michigan which basically makes it legally ok for public universities and other civil service arenas to discriminate against women and people of color. Proposal 2 won 58 percent to 42 percent, with the majority of votes coming from white male conservatives, based on exit polls according to DiversityInc. The proposal had the mis-leading name of The Michigan Civil Rights Initiative (MCRI), leading one to wonder if everyone who voted yes realized they were voting against civil rights.

The Governator just won’t go away. After hitting the polls last night, the only thing I had a really sinking feeling about was my state’s gubernatorial race. Arnold’s opponent — a man who makes John Kerry seem edgy — milktoast Phil Angelides, didn’t stand a chance in hell. He didn’t have the charisma, that was clear, but apparently he also didn’t have Arnie’s money. Reports say Angelides blew most of his bank in the primaries and didn’t have much to spend closer to election day. No wonder I can’t remember even seeing one ad for him, but I guess he figured that the San Francisco Bay area was a given for him. He was wrong, as the Bay ended up pretty much split between him and Arnie, though (not surprisingly) the city and county of San Francisco voted 63% in favor of Angelides.
So, here in California we’re preparing for a full term of bad pronunciation, xenophobic/racist comments and feet in mouths as we assimilate the sad fact that we’ll begin another year with a rich washed up actor as our leader.

Yesterday Arizona voters helped three proposals targetting undocumented immigrants and one English only proposal pass by about a three-to-one margin statewide. Prop. 100 denies bail to undocumented immigrants charged with felonies. Prop. 102 prohibits undocumented immigrants from being awarded punitive damages in any civil lawsuit filed in the state. Eligibility of illegal immigrants to file for compensatory damages is not affected. Propositions 300 prohibits undocument immigrants from receiving in-state tuition, financial assistance or access to state-subsidized childcare and family literacy programs. It will also require the Board of Education, community colleges, universities and the Department of Economic Security to report any illegal immigrants who try to apply for those programs. Prop. 103 declares English the official language.
