“I voted” in pictures + a plea

Picture%201.pngHere in wacky San Francisco — where we’re voting on a measure proposed by my local politicians to make calling for the impeachment of George W. Bush and Dick Cheney city policy — I’m off to the polls. To echo Mala, have you voted? Tons of people withhold their vote year after year because they are jaded. I used to do that. I don’t anymore. Like Mala says, it’s a weapon at our disposal. I’m still jaded, but not as dumb.

Other not-so-dumb people have been documenting their adventures in voting today in photos on my favorite website, Flickr. Check out this blog post about all the happy voters on the site, and have a look at some photos to get psyched up.

Get out and vote. Don’t make excuses. There’s still time — polls don’t close for hours. And I guarantee you it will make you feel better.

To the polls I go!

It’s Election Day : I (grudgingly) Voted. Did You?

boothsmall.jpgWhenever election day rolls around I am reminded of a few things. One is that imfamous phrase, “The Latino Swing Vote“. This idea, that Latinos because of our sheer numbers can make or break an elecion has led to positives like non-partisan voter registration drives and has led to negatives like politicians pandering to “Latino interests” with a slew of commercials of them speaking really bad Spanish or with Latino celebs/politicos singing Que Linda Manita. I am reminded of Malcolm X’s famous speech, The Ballot or the Bullet. I am reminded of the late Richie Perez and how he always said that there are many weapons at our disposal for revolution and voting is one of those tools.

Rene%20Lavin%2C%20Tego%20Calderon%20001.jpgMost Cuban celebs aren’t quiet about their political postions, especially when it comes to their feelings about their beloved patria. Last Friday at the 7th Annual Latin Grammy Awards, actor René Lavan, who was a presenter, proved to be no exception. Backstage at Madison Square Garden, Lavan, who was born in Artemisa, Cuba said that if Ernesto “el Che” Guevara were alive today he would be like an Osama Bin Laden. This was said while Lavan spoke about his role as Miguel in yet another film about el Che Guevara. The film, Guerrilla, in pre- production now and set to be released in 2008 stars Benecio Del Toro. Del Toro plays el Che during a visit to New York City to address the United Nations.

Get a Brazilian city for just 2 million bucks

1%20IMG_3768.jpgSky-high property prices may make it impossible for most of us to buy a house in San Francisco or New York City, but for a mere $2.2 million you can get a whole Brazilian city. An abandoned one, yes, but one with 70 houses, a 22 room hotel, a grocery store and much more. It’s like playing dollies!

Located in Southeast Brazil, in the state of Minas Gerais, the ghost town has but one inhabitant: an engineer named Nilton Braz, who takes care of the place and is in charge of the sale, according to Spain’s 20 Minutos.

The city, built 35 years ago to house the workers on the Jaguará dam project has 70 houses, a 22-room hotel, a grocery store, a town square, a school, , tiene 70 casas, un hotel de 22 habitaciones, un supermercado, plaza, escuela, a church and paved streets…

The best part? It’s never been lived in.

According to 20 Minutos, there have been offers to buy the city from as far away as the U.S. and Germany.

Check out the town’s website: I think I even see some swimming pools in the photos.

And the UN Seat Goes to Panama

panama.gifThe fight was originally between U.S. backed Guatemala and Venezuela, bit ultimately it was Panama who won a seat on the U.N. Security Council on the 48th ballot today.

Panama got 164 votes in the 192-member U.N. General Assembly, more than the 120 needed to win a two-year term starting Jan. 1 on the U.N.’s most powerful body. Venezuela got 11 votes, Guatemala 4 votes, and Barbados 1 vote.

the five new members of the Security Council now are Belgium, Indonesia, Italy, Panama and South Africa.

The 34 Latin American and Caribbean nations endorsed Panama as a candidate on Friday after a standoff between Guatemala and Venezuela that was the third-longest battle for a seat on the Security Council in the U.N.’s 61-year history.
