Spanish pop group la Oreja de Van Gogh took home a Latin Grammy Award on Friday evening for Best Pop Album By A Duo Or Group With Vocal, but according to some they sure didn’t deserve any fashion awards. Backstage after they won a style reporter for a certain NYC based Spanish langauge newspaper dised lead vocalist Amaia Montero and a bandmate by asking and I quote, ” Why are you dressed like that?”. Amaia Montero was obviously offended and pointed out that the shirt she was wearing was Gucci and called the reporter “floja”. No wonder the music industry is going down the toilet…..too many people worrying about what musicians have on their backs instead of what kind of music they are making.

In case you didn’t know tomorrow is election day and one of the key races happening in the U.S. is the California Governor’s election. According to a study released today by Garcia Research Associates, Inc. most Cali Latinos aren’t happy with current Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger , but most also don’t put much faith in a win by his main contender Phil Angelides.
Four days before the election, 64% of the Latino respondents, including citizens and non-citizens, disapprove of the job Schwarzenegger is doing as Governor. On the issue of who Latinos think will win the governor’s race, Angelides and Schwarzenegger are nearly tied with 37% and 34% respectively, with 29% unwilling or unable to guess the outcome.
Does that mean that Cali Latinos will have to put up with being called hot-blooded and unwilling to assimilate?

Following in the footsteps of other towns across the country, Escondido, California has decided to write discrimination into its laws by forbidding landlords to rent to undocumented immigrants. But our friends at the ACLU and a coalition of immigrants rights groups are striking back:
Saying the law is “riddled with constitutional flaws” and is discriminatory and “reprehensible,” a coalition of civil rights groups has filed a federal lawsuit seeking to void an Escondido ordinance that forbids landlords from renting to illegal immigrants. The suit was filed yesterday on behalf of two Escondido landlords and two illegal immigrants who live in the city and whose children are U.S. citizens who attend local schools.
According to the San Diego Union Tribune, the decision to move forward with the lawsuit was announced last week via press conference, while the Minutemen held an “unrelated” press conference at the Escondido city hall, “interrupted by a minor scuffle”.

Latin American leaders and the Spanish president, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, and the Spanish king Juan Carlos I are at the Iberoamerican Summit in Montevideo this week. And apparently not all is roses between the Spanish leader and several Latin American presidents. In fact, Zapatero is taking hits both from leftist (ironic, considering he’s such a lefty himself) and right wing leaders.
First up for a punch is Colombia’s Alvaro Uribe, who, along with leaders from Bolivia and Ecuador criticized Spain’s strict immigration laws which make it difficult for Latin Americans to visit or reside in the country, highlighting certain contradictions:
The most outspoken was Colombian leader Alvaro Uribe who criticized Europe (represented by Spain at the event) for “being restrictive with our immigrants but ineffective at controlling the entry of drugs.”

If anyone has doubts about the direction Latin America is headed, then one needs to check out the latest elections results coming out of Nicaragua. 16 years ago, Sandinista Daniel Ortega was forced out of office thanks to the United States, as of this morning Ortega is ahead in early poll counts of the presidential elections held yesterday in the Central American nation.
With 15 percent of polling stations counted, Ortega had 40 percent of Sunday’s vote, compared with 33 percent for his closest challenger, the wealthy banker Eduardo Montealegre.
Three others rivals were well behind: Sandinista dissident Edmundo Jarquin, ruling-party candidate Jose Rizo and former Contra rebel Eden Pastora.
To win outright and avoid a runoff, the leftist Sandinista leader needs just 35 percent of the vote and a five-point advantage over his closest opponent.
