Best Salsa Album went to el caballero de la salsa, Gilberto Santa Rosa. Although he had been nominated 7 times, one for each year the Latin Grammy Awards have been happening, this is his first win! Gilberto spoke to the press not just of his own 30 year career and win but about fellow Boricua, Ricky Martin who was named Person of the Year. Gilberto also added that salsa as a genre was so big that it could nd maybe should have have its own awards show. When asked about reggaeton as a genre, Gilberto said he respects reggaetón as an authentic Latino genre on par with salsa.

Well, I wasn’t fully able to fulfill my promise to report on Salma Hayek‘s appearance on Ugly Betty last night. A little thing called the Latin Grammys got in the way. I was, however, able to see what must have been the “big” scene of the episode: Salma with no underwear on standing on Eric Mabius’ shoulders. But that’s all I can tell you, other than she looked beautiful (big surprise).
Salma has been up to other stuff, though. She appeared at a Hollywood screening of her homey Penelope Cruz‘s new film, Almodovar’s Volver, where she gushed over the Spanish actress during a tribute program for Pe:
Salma Hayek, after giving her friend a huge hug, began to cry as she described her as “a fairy that is not of this world because these qualities are only seen on the screen, and it’s there where she feels more comfortable.”
Salma, joined in the audience by celebrities (including Prince) and Penelope’s family, couldn’t stop gushing:
Everyone was quiet except the Mexican actress, who opened her mouth to announce to the public that “today you will see the best of Cruz.” And “because Penelope is genius when she speaks but when Pedro writes what she says, she sounds more than ever like herself,” said Hayek, with pride.

Yesterday, while a bunch of Latino musicians were being honored at the Latin Grammys in New York, Mel Gibson was being honored on this coast by a group of Latino business owners for his film Apocalypto.
Enthusiastic applause greeted the Oscar-winning actor and director as he walked onstage at the Beverly Hilton Hotel to receive the Latino Business Association’s Chairman’s Visionary Award.Gibson answered questions from association Chairman Rick Sarmiento about the film, a Mayan-language epic filmed in Mexico chronicling the decline of the native civilization.
The head of the organization says that Gibson was worthy of the award for using all Latino actors in the film, while Gibson pointed out that the movie was cast using all Mexican actors, most of whom were not actors at all.
Gibson was also quoted as saying that his movie is “a badge of honor for the Latino community.
Spain’s 20 Minutos published a really unflattering photo of Gibson at the event, check it out.
