A follow-up to Mala’s post from a couple of weeks ago.
In a giant leap backwards, the Nicaraguan parliament has yielded to the pressures of religious groups and the Nicaraguan president himself and moved to make therapeutic abortion (abortion to save a mother’s life) illegal and punishable by law in the coutry.
The parliament has left the current sentence for those who practice the abortions in place — six years in prison — in spite of the fact that President Enrique Bolaños was pushing for a much harsher sentence of 20 to 30 years.
Meanwhile, according to Spain’s 20 Minutos, the United Nations and the European Union are “worried”. You see, it’s no coincidence that this is being debated now…election day is just over a week away.
The measure was approved with the help from the left in an attempt to bolster favor for their candidate Daniel Ortega.
According to 20 Minutos, in a joint statement the United Nations and the European Union said:
“given that this is a highly sensitive issue that affects the life, health, and judicial safety of Nicaraguan women,” this issue should not be discussed so close to the November 5th elections.
Reuters reports that hundreds of women protested the passing of the measure outside of the National Assembly Wednesday night, many calling the decision a “death sentence” for pregnant women and a “violation of human rights”.

The Latin Grammy Awards are less than a week away and the announcements about who will be gracing the stage as performers and presenters just keep on coming. Yesterday the The Latin Recording Academy accounced that nominees Ricky Martin and famed tenor Andrea Bocelli will be singing their hearts out at Madison Square Garden. Additional presenters include Calle 13. And in case you all were wondering, La Mala did find a dress for red carpet. Now if I only could find shoes.

Mexican President-elect Felipe Calderón today called the extension of the border wall proposed by the U.S. government “a serious mistake”.
The comments were made in a press conference during a visit with the Canadian Prime Minister in which, according to Mexican daily El Universal he compared the building of the border wall with that of the Berlin Wall.
Calderón also called the decision on the part of the U.S. to continue with the project “deplorable” and claimed that “it won’t resolve anything”.
Meanwhile, Mexican president Vicente Fox is calling the wall “useless and shameful”, and went on to say:
“I think this is shameful for the U.S. and proof of its inability to see the immigration issue as one of mutual responsibility.”

Is our lovely Shak-attack finally going to tie the knot with her boyfriend, Antonio De la Rua? Rumors have been flying for years, but it seems that controversial (ousted) ex Argentine President Fernando De la Rua — Shaki’s would-be suegro — is hinting that the pair has at least talked about the possibility:
Former President Fernando de la Rua told Listin Diario that the hip-shaking international superstar and his son, Antonio, have talked about marriage and raising a family but have no immediate plans to tie the knot.“They prefer to wait,” de la Rua said. “Kids today would rather live as a couple, they don’t believe that marriage is necessary to be happy.”
Those crazy kids of today. Mr. De La Rua also had some nice things to say about Shakira, calling her a “very good woman” and “a lover of peace“.

Seems like Telemundo’s Cotorreando had it all wrong when they said that Aracely Arambula’s bebe with crooner Luis Miguel is a girl. The Mexican actress and singer gave an exclusive interview and exclusive fotos to the magazine ¡HOLA!. Aracely graces the cover with her pregnancy belly exposed and saying the baby, due in December, is a boy that will be named Miguel. Wait. So the baby’s named will be Miguel Miguel?

The United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, an advocacy organization representing two million Hispanic-owned businesses in the U.S. issued a statement today regarding the planned signing by President Bush of the U.S. Mexico Border Bill that will put in place a 700-mile long fence along the southern border.
“On behalf of our USHCC Board of Directors, we are extremely disappointed by the President’s decision to sign the U.S.-Mexico Border Bill into law and do it during a nationally-televised White House ceremony. Rather than cheering and applauding the President and our Congressional leaders for a law that promotes misguided enforcement- only legislation that builds fences between allies, hurts small businesses and pushes 12 million people further into the shadows, we should be demanding that our national leadership seek comprehensive solutions to this complex issue. We further call on the President and those Congressional leaders that originally promised to seek true comprehensive reform to live up to their commitments.” said David C. Lizárraga, USHCC, Chairman of the Board of Directors.

What do enviromentalism and anti-immigrant racism have in common? Alot actually if you pay close attention to some of the rhetoric coming from immigration and “green” groups. Many organizations tapped into the 300 millionth birth story as an overpopulation issue. Take the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) for example. They sent emails out…
with the subject “300 Million and Counting!” — complete with the obligatory black-and-white photo of a crowded city street at rush hour: Hell is other people. “Can the U.S. sustain this continued increase in its population or will this growth suffocate a once thriving nation?,”

Attorney General Alberto Gonzales is in Madrid this week attending an anti-terrorism work group, and had a few things to say about the United States’ image in Europe and what needs to be done about it.
He blamed the country’s deteriorating image on misunderstanding in Europe about what the U.S. is doing to fight terrorism.“Part of the misunderstanding is the fault of the United States in the sense that we need to be out there more, talking about what we are doing and why,” he said.
Gonzales is talking about the U.S.’s “anti-terrorism actions” in Iraq and in other parts of the world, and how the country’s respect for rule of law is often questioned.
“The notion that the United States does not fully support the rule of law is one I find very disappointing,” Gonzales told reporters, especially given that President Bush “believes the Unites States is the leader, is a beacon of hope in the world and it’s important that our actions should reflect a total commitment to the rule of law.”
What I find disappointing is that this man is no more than a puppet for W and is spreading the same old line of “you just don’t understand us” in Europe, a place where people understand exactly what we are doing. That’s why they hate us. Saying “we know you hate us, and this is why…” isn’t going to help matters but hey, who needs allies, right?
