ImmigrationWall.jpgMexican President-elect Felipe Calderón today called the extension of the border wall proposed by the U.S. government “a serious mistake”.

The comments were made in a press conference during a visit with the Canadian Prime Minister in which, according to Mexican daily El Universal he compared the building of the border wall with that of the Berlin Wall.

Calderón also called the decision on the part of the U.S. to continue with the project “deplorable” and claimed that “it won’t resolve anything”.

Meanwhile, Mexican president Vicente Fox is calling the wall “useless and shameful”, and went on to say:

“I think this is shameful for the U.S. and proof of its inability to see the immigration issue as one of mutual responsibility.”

rua015ln.jpgIs our lovely Shak-attack finally going to tie the knot with her boyfriend, Antonio De la Rua? Rumors have been flying for years, but it seems that controversial (ousted) ex Argentine President Fernando De la Rua — Shaki’s would-be suegro — is hinting that the pair has at least talked about the possibility:

Former President Fernando de la Rua told Listin Diario that the hip-shaking international superstar and his son, Antonio, have talked about marriage and raising a family but have no immediate plans to tie the knot.

“They prefer to wait,” de la Rua said. “Kids today would rather live as a couple, they don’t believe that marriage is necessary to be happy.”

Those crazy kids of today. Mr. De La Rua also had some nice things to say about Shakira, calling her a “very good woman” and “a lover of peace“.

The U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Doesn’t Like Fences

border_fence.jpgThe United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, an advocacy organization representing two million Hispanic-owned businesses in the U.S. issued a statement today regarding the planned signing by President Bush of the U.S. Mexico Border Bill that will put in place a 700-mile long fence along the southern border.

“On behalf of our USHCC Board of Directors, we are extremely disappointed by the President’s decision to sign the U.S.-Mexico Border Bill into law and do it during a nationally-televised White House ceremony. Rather than cheering and applauding the President and our Congressional leaders for a law that promotes misguided enforcement- only legislation that builds fences between allies, hurts small businesses and pushes 12 million people further into the shadows, we should be demanding that our national leadership seek comprehensive solutions to this complex issue. We further call on the President and those Congressional leaders that originally promised to seek true comprehensive reform to live up to their commitments.” said David C. Lizárraga, USHCC, Chairman of the Board of Directors.

The Greening of Racism

overpopulation.jpgWhat do enviromentalism and anti-immigrant racism have in common? Alot actually if you pay close attention to some of the rhetoric coming from immigration and “green” groups. Many organizations tapped into the 300 millionth birth story as an overpopulation issue. Take the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) for example. They sent emails out…

with the subject “300 Million and Counting!” — complete with the obligatory black-and-white photo of a crowded city street at rush hour: Hell is other people. “Can the U.S. sustain this continued increase in its population or will this growth suffocate a once thriving nation?,”
