The one country with sustainable development: Cuba

While the rest of the world is busy chingando the ecosystem, a report published by the World Wildlife Foundation claims that the only country in the world with “sustainable development” is Cuba:
WWF includes in its report a graph which shows two features: the human development index (established by the United Nations) and the so-called “ecological footprint” which shows the per person energy and resources comsued in each country.Surprisingly, only Cuba has passed in both arenas, which is enough to be designated a country that “meets the minimum sensitivity criteria”.
The study’s authors credit the high level of literacy, long life expectancy and low consumption of energy for this success.
The authors also claim that Latin America is the region that leads in sustainable development, and that is due in part to the fact that, according to them:
“…people are happier there and maybe that’s because there is a better balance between development and the environment.”
That doesn’t sound very scientific to me. And I can’t say that people in general are “happier” in Latin America. They worry about different things and let other things go maybe, but that generalization is a little bit far-fetched, I think. Though there are those who think otherwise.

The World Wildlife Foundation ( WWF) does a great work around our World to study, protect and help to conserve our natural surrounding and environment. For many years WWF-Canada has been working with Cuba’s Florida y Fauna to help to conserve and preserve Cuba ‘s most beautiful mountain and coastal regions. Cuba is a natural paradise of tropical and Caribbean splendor. From Baracoa in the far east, where Christopher Columbus place the first cross in the new world to the Mountains of the Sierra Maestra, and the Gulf of Mexico coast of Pinar del Rio, the entire Island network of Cuba is truely one of the most beautiful Islands in the World. The Cubans appreciate their natural beauty and work to protect it. I have helped to bring about conservation in the caribbean as a Floridian, and I am proud of the book publisher by our great photographer Clyde Butcher : ” Cuba-The Natural Beauty ” (www.clydebutcher.com ).
In the next few years several important conservation conferences and workshops will be held both in Cuba and the Caribbean with Cuba’s Ministry os Science, Technology, and the Environment and with Flora y Fauna. I encourace WWF of keep up the friendly work and others to follow their leadership.
