Latino voters intimidated in California

13:01 H | Topics: California - Controversia - Immigration - Politics

hate_mail1.jpgGreetings from the great state of California, where some members of a certain infamous county's GOP think it's okay to threaten people over mail and scare them away from the polls. They aren't getting away with it, though.

It seems that a Vietnamese immigrant running for Congress (check out the awesome photo of him after the jump, courtesy of his website) on the Republican ticket in Orange County thought that sending anti-immigrant hate mail to Latino voters would be a productive way to sway the polls his way:

State investigators have linked a Republican campaign to letters sent to thousands of Orange County Hispanics warning them they could go to jail or be deported if they vote next month, a spokesman for the attorney general said.

"We have identified where we believe the mailing list was obtained," said Nathan Barankin, spokesman for Attorney General Bill Lockyer.

While investigators are refusing to cite the name of the person at the head of the campaign, local media is reporting that:

the investigation appeared to be focused on the campaign of Tan D. Nguyen, a Republican who immigrated to the U.S. from Vietnam as a child and is now challenging Democratic Rep. Loretta Sanchez for her seat in Congress. Nguyen's Web site says he opposes illegal immigration.

According to ABC News, the letter, written in Spanish, says, in part:

You are advised that if your residence in this country is illegal or you are an immigrant, voting in a federal election is a crime that could result in jail time."
Since when are immigrant and citizen mutually exclusive? My mom is an immigrant. She's also a citizen and legally allowed to vote.

The letter, according to KGET TV, was written in "awkward Spanish" and signed "Sergio Ramirez".

Vietnamese-American political groups and Orange County Republicans are denouncing the letter, as is apparently Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

See and that's what so many people still refuse to get. Like it or not, immigrant has been associated with Latino, period, so with all the anti-immigrant sentiment around, all Latinos suffer, even those who have legalized status. Case in point, being subjected to hate mail.

You are right...some people still refuse to get the idea:
WE ARE AGAINST ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION.
You want to come here? Then do it LEGALLY!!!!!!
Stop breaking the law and expecting handouts.
BUILD THE WALL NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Illegal immigrants are financially reducing the great nation of THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA into the economically depressed and politically corrupt mexican sink hole that they are so desperately swimming, walking and driving out of.
It's about time the legal AMERICAN voting citizens of this country wake up and start writing and passing laws to correct this most unfortunate situation. These laws will hopefully include such things as a border fence running the full length of our shared borders, manned by the national guards or our military, denial of public services, punishment of individuals who employ illegals, making illegal immigration a felony and finally wholesale deportation of illegal immigrants with the liquidation of their assets which are then added to THE UNITED STATES NATIONAL TREASURY to offset the financial burden that has been incurred by the tax paying citizens of THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
By the way people, for those of you who haven't had time to learn about our AMERICAN CONSTITUTION (i realize you may have been busy attending lame boycotts or watching your soccer team lose at the world cup) our first amendment right is that of freedom of speech and the press. If you don't like what Mr.Tan has a right to say, get legal and get out and vote. Or,if you don't want to get legal, just get out of THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Go back south and fix the political and social problems that are bleeding the life out of what is called Mexico.
signed,
A TRUE AMERICAN

China built a big wall, and read what happened to them. Germany built a wall, and look at what happened there. Israel is trying to build a wall, and look at what is happening there. It is time that people stop making ignorant remarks fueled by anger.

Building walls has never been a smart solution.

It's always disconcerting to read the amount of aggression that people feel towards immigrants in this country. But immigration is not new. Every last person (with the exception of Native Americans) are immigrants. Up until the 1920's most of us were illegal. White, black, Asian, Mexican. The United States is not the exclusive domain of the native born. We are ALL immigrants or have family members who are. Immigrant and Patriot, Immigrant and Citizen, Immigrant and True American are not mutually exclusive. Simply asking people to "go back home and fix their own countries" is to not understand how OUR great country relies on the exploitation of other nations. It does not understand how the UN, World Bank and US policies create the conditions that force migration to the US. I know it's easier to denounce immigrants (legal or not) than to try and understand how our own policies work. We are all busy people and we all want quick fixes. We want to feel that we have some immediate control of our society. The truth is that those great American corporations taking jobs overseas do it so they can sell you $50 dollar sneakers. You want the great prices at Wal-Mart, then you better be okay with putting up with illegal immigrants fleeing the exploitation of the "maquiladoras" where those affordable products are made. The truth is that every "patriot" participates in this process. We do need to find a better solution, no question. Hate is not that solution. Blaming Mexico is not that solution. Pretending that our own families are immigrants is not that solution. Understanding how we affect the process is. Refusing to let corporations, legislators, and our own ignorance distract us from how we keep the machine going, is. Susan, a TRUE AMERICAN.

Too much hate. Tsk, tsk, tsk. It's truly sad. Now, ask yourselves this question:
Why did my ancestors or I come to this country?
Probably because the native country sucked or still sucks.
On the other hand, Mr. Tan has every right to do as he pleases, yet why is he protesting in the U.S. instead of Vietnam?
Think about it.

Yes, build the Berlin---I mean, the Border Wall!

Let's dump millions into more Corporate Welfare "solutions" while ignoring the systemic realities of our low wage/low benefit economy that requires cheap and exploitable labor in order to function!

Yes, I think ignoring the *real* problems and just building a Wall is a wonderful idea!

First, being against illegal immigration does not make one against legal immigration. There is a difference.

The letter was a dumb idea. It is a little bit heavy-handed. I don't know if the use of the word immigrant was a translation error or intentional. I would not be surprised if it is a mistake. It was intentional, I completely disagree with it. I am against illegal immigration, not American citizens.

Either way, his website boasts the photo of him we featured above that says "Why should an immigrant be against immigration?" Not "illegal immigration", but immigration in general. If it weren't for immigration he would still be in Vietnam.
