Small town racism in the midwest

danvilleky.jpgA small village in Illinois is “cracking down” on Latino immigrants and declaring English the “official language” of the town, called Carpentersville. Whatever happened to that sweet midwestern hospitality?

In northwest Carpentersville, village trustees are proposing to make English the town’s official language and fine businesses or landlords who employ or rent to illegal immigrants.

It’s stirring up quite a controversy.

Two village trustees said the influx of immigrants is hindering the community. The so-called “illegals” are draining the village’s resources, they said.

The townspeople are also lobbying for some laws which basically amount to illegal themselves, like for instance fining landlords who rent to the “illegals”.

Much was made of the divorce of Spanish heartthrob Alejandro Sanz from his Mexican model wife, Jaydy Mitchel. There were rumors that Alejandro was gay (and having an affair with Spanish pop star Miguel Bosé), or that he was going back to his ex girlfriend and mother of his first child, yada yada. Now we know he’s moved on with his life and has a new girlfriend, a Puerto Rican beauty ten years his junior whom he refers to as his “personal assistant”.

Latino Voting Power in the Upcoming Elections

boothsmall.jpgWith election campaigns in full swing all over the United States, there actually hasn’t been too much pandering to the Latino community. Personally I haven’t seen an overwhelming number of campaign ads interupt the evening novelas (with the exception of Willie Colon singing Que Linda Manita over and over for Eliot Spitzer) and I certainly haven’t seen huge voter registration and education efforts happening in the Latino neighborhoods here in NYC. Both Democrats and Republicans have however launched ads that have offended the Latino community, likening us, especially immigrants, with terrorists. If the recent numbers coming out of the Pew Hispanic Center are right, both parties are losing out by not inviting us in to join.

Immigration Raids Stopping la Musica

dancing203x152.jpgDance clubs and concerts are the last places people think about being impacted by immigration and its so-called “reform”, but a recent article from San Antonio, Texas tells how dance and concert halls are feeling the heat thanks to immigration raids.

Artists and promoters are reporting that recent raids by the U.S. Border Patrol on dancehalls and nightclubs that usually play music or feature artists that cater to Mexican music fans have dramatically cut down attendance in recent months.

Because halls can no longer fill their dance floors anymore, musicians are being forced not play their music south of the border.
